Don’t get me wrong, I love visiting popular vacation spots like Yellowstone and LA, but I feel most at home in America’s lesser-known hidden gems. The types of secret, underrated travel destinations in the US with lots of wonder and zero crowds. And of course, much lower prices.

From off-the-beaten-path national and state parks to charming towns and remote beaches, here are 33 of the best hidden gems and underrated vacation spots in the US that you should visit in 2025.

Ready to ditch the usual tourist traps and dive into America’s best-kept secrets? I’ve been on a mission, roaming from coast to coast, to uncover the coolest hidden vacation spots the US has to offer.

I’m talking about tucked-away beaches where the sunsets are unreal, quirky small towns with vibes you won’t find anywhere else, and wild, natural wonders that’ll have you snapping pics non-stop. This article is your insider guide to the places that’ll make your trip epic.

Though located just an hour from Las Vegas, Valley of Fire State Park is a lesser-known gem in the US. It has a lot to offer in the way of precious scenery, hiking, and camping. The heavy-hitting attractions in nearby Arizona and Utah tend to steal the limelight.

In fact, if it weren’t so close to some of the country’s most prominent national parks – like Bryce, Zion, and the Grand Canyon – I would expect Valley of Fire to be a national park rather than a state one.

What Makes this Secret Vacation Spot so Special?

• As its name suggests, Valley of Fire is absolute fire. The red-hot sandstone sprawled around the park looks like it belongs on Mars.
• Throughout this valley, there are also slot canyons, orange and pink rock formations, and ancient petroglyphs carved into sandstone, to name a few. 
• A day here is just enough to scratch the surface, but a couple of days is ideal to discover all the gems in one of the best hidden vacation spots in the US.

2. Capitol Reef National Park, Utah

Capitol Reef National Park is one of the lesser-visited parks in Utah’s “Mighty 5” national parks. Limited time means visitors often overlook or rush through Capitol Reef, not giving it the attention it deserves. However, this underrated park is a must-see!

• While it lacks iconic features like Bryce Canyon’s hoodoos or Zion’s towering canyon, the park’s unique offerings are still impressive. For instance, the Cathedral Valley Loop offers one of Utah’s best off-road driving excursions.
• A portion of the scenic Burr Trail road passes through the park. Meanwhile, the Burr Trail Switchbacks are a well-known highlight within Capitol Reef.
• For a day visit, drive the Scenic Drive, and see Hickman Bridge and Grand Wash trail. I also recommend a winter visit to experience the park with fewer crowds.

3. Gatlinburg, Tennessee

Located at the gateway of the Great Smoky Mountains, Gatlinburg merits a visit this year. This family-friendly, mountain town in eastern Tennessee is one of the best hidden gems and vacation spots in the US.

From its precious scenery to its adrenaline-inducing activities, outdoorsy types will love everything this small town has to offer. Gatlinburg has so many fun things to do for the whole family, including whitewater rafting, biking, horseback riding, and ziplining.

Gatlinburg is also connected to 600 miles of hiking trails, ideal for hiking and snapping photos of some of the state’s most scenic landscapes. You’ll also want to check out nearby Pigeon Forge, another one of the best places to vacation in the US.

For a bird’s-eye view of the town and mountainous terrain, take an elevator to the top of the Gatlinburg Space Needle, an observation deck with 360-degree views. Nearby, there’s also a 2-mile-long cable car that brings you to Ober Gatlinburg, a popular ski area and amusement park.

Eureka Springs in Arkansas is one of my go-to destinations for bringing family and friends that are interested in Victorian architecture. Plus, it has an awesome historic downtown district. Northern Arkansas’ location is less traveled compared to other state destinations.

• It features unique outdoor attractions like Thorncrown Chapel and Blue Spring Heritage Center. What also attracts me to this place is the lively arts community with galleries, theaters, and events.
• It’s also known for the Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge for rescued big cats. You can book guided habitat day tours. This place is the perfect spot to help children see the importance of wildlife conservation. 
• Eureka Springs is surrounded by lush Ozark Mountain scenery, making it an ideal travel destination in the summer months. 

5. Blackwater Falls State Park, West Virginia

West Virginia is a gem in and of itself, so it’s no wonder that Blackwater Falls State Park is among the under-the-radar vacation spots in the US. In the park, the star of the show is undoubtedly Blackwater Falls. This 57-foot waterfall offers one of the best photography spots in the state. Other must-see sights in the park include Elaka Falls, Lindy Point, and Pendleton Point Overlook.

I travel to Minnesota’s Tettegouche State Park whenever I want to see lush pine forests for a quiet backdrop for scenic hikes. The picturesque views of Lake Superior along the shoreline are among my favorite photography backdrops.

• Eight parks sample Minnesota’s natural beauty along Lake Superior. Tettegouche State Park is a must-visit between Duluth and Grand Marais.
• This northern location offers a mix of forests, waterfalls, and Lake Superior’s cliffed shoreline. Shovel Point hike has over 300 steps to panoramic lake views. Hike to High Falls through dense forests to the Baptism River.
• You can relax at the Baptism River’s pebble beach for sunrises and lake dips. Keep in mind that summer is busy, and fall foliage brings brilliant colors. Start early and camp nearby for solitude on trails.

7. Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming

Located in Wyoming, Grand Teton National Park is one of the most unique vacations in the US. It’s often overshadowed by nearby Yellowstone and Glacier parks, yet it deserves a spot in the limelight.

Ever heard of the Trapp Family Lodge? Yeah, the Von Trapp family from ‘The Sound of Music’ fame set it up. It’s a cool mix of Austrian vibes and Vermont scenery. Staying there is like living in a slice of Hollywood history, although with way better scenery.

• There are plenty of activities like sightseeing, hiking, camping, and visiting parks in the Black Hills. A summer or early fall trip to South Dakota is highly recommended for outdoor enthusiasts.
• There’s no need to travel far to the Grand Canyon. From Rapid City, visitors can explore Mount Rushmore, Jewel Cave, Wind Cave, Custer State Park, and Crazy Horse Mountain. North of Rapid City is scenic Spearfish Canyon for driving and hiking.

• There’s nothing more spectacular than seeing fall colors and mountains reflect on pretty lakes in Northern Maine. To access the Knife Edge Trail and many other sought-after parts of the park, you’ll have to get a reservation in advance.
