As a born-and-raised Bostonian, I’ve spent years road-tripping down the East Coast with my wife…hitting everywhere from the rocky cliffs of Acadia to the mossy charm of Savannah. We’ve wandered cobblestone streets in Charleston, sipped wine in the Finger Lakes, watched fall roll through the Berkshires, and caught sunrise over the Outer Banks. And if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that the East Coast has romance dialed in.

Whether you’re into cozy mountain resorts, breezy beach towns, or historic cities that glow at golden hour, this stretch of the U.S. delivers. In this guide, I’ve picked 8 of the most romantic getaways…places I’ve personally experienced that feel tailor-made for slow mornings, scenic drives, and spontaneous detours.

Are you looking to impress your new partner? Propose to the person of your dreams? Celebrate an anniversary? Whatever your goals, there’s no better place to make it happen than at one of these 8 romantic getaways on the East Coast. For couples traveling together, you won’t believe these romantic East Coast getaways in 2025.

1. Charleston, South Carolina

Charleston is pure romantic magic wrapped in Southern charm and Spanish moss. This isn’t your typical romantic getaway…but where cobblestone streets whisper centuries-old love stories and horse-drawn carriages pass by mansions that look like they’re straight out of a fairytale.

The city practically oozes romance. Picture candlelit dinners at rooftop restaurants overlooking the harbor, sunset strolls through Rainbow Row’s candy-colored houses, and intimate carriage rides through the historic district. The French Quarter feels like stepping into a Nicholas Sparks novel, complete with hidden gardens and balconies perfect for stolen kisses. Beyond the romantic, there are also plenty of fun nightlife spots in Charleston.

What makes Charleston irresistible? The food scene is incredible. Think shrimp and grits at FIG, craft cocktails at speakeasy bars, and those famous she-crab soup tastings. Magnolia Plantation’s romantic gardens are absolutely stunning, while ghost tours through the atmospheric streets add just the right amount of mystery.

Charleston doesn’t try too hard to be romantic, it just is. The slower pace, the warm hospitality, the way golden hour light hits those historic facades… it’s effortlessly enchanting. My wife and I love visiting here for these reasons!

Where to stay when traveling to Charleston

After a perfect day of taking in the Southern charm, you can now get off your feet and relax. Here are the top three hotels I recommend in Charleston.

  • The Palmetto Hotel.  If you’re looking for an authentic Charleston experience, this boutique hotel is the perfect place. As one of Charleston’s newest hotels, The Palmetto is Southern Hospitality at its finest.
  • The Charleston Place. Nestled in Charleston’s historic district, The Charleston Hotel is the ultimate destination for award-winning dining, a world-class spa, and luxury accommodations.
  • HarbourView Inn. The newly renovated HarbourView Inn provides an ideal setting for a most intimate experience, including milk and (award-winning) cookies at bedtime. Enjoy panoramic views of Charleston from the rooftop terrace of the Inn while sipping on your favorite glass of champagne.

2. Bar Harbor, Maine

Bar Harbor is hands down one of the most underrated romantic spots on the East Coast. This charming Maine town sits right on the doorstep of Acadia National Park, where rugged coastlines meet pristine wilderness in ways that’ll make you forget the rest of the world exists.

Summer is prime time here. You can hike Cadillac Mountain for sunrise (literally the first sunrise in America), then spend afternoons exploring tide pools at Thunder Hole or kayaking through Frenchman Bay. The lobster rolls at Shaw’s Wharf are legendary, and there’s something incredibly romantic about cracking claws together while watching boats bob in the harbor.

This coastal Maine town doubles as a romantic East Coast getaway.

Fall transforms Bar Harbor into something magical. The foliage around Jordan Pond is absolutely stunning, and the crisp air makes those cozy dinners at Havana even more intimate. Winter brings a different kind of romance with cross-country skiing trails and fireplaces at historic inns.

What makes it special? The perfect balance of outdoor adventure and small-town charm. You can spend the day hiking granite cliffs in Acadia National Park, then enjoy wine at a waterfront restaurant. It’s sophisticated without being pretentious, wild without being overwhelming.

Where to stay when traveling to Bar Harbor:

The classic charm of Bar Harbor is not lost on its selection of hotels, motels, inns, and B&Bs. After you have all the lobster and whoopie pie you can handle in one day, be sure to settle down for the evening in one of the following selections. You won’t be disappointed!

  • Thornhedge Inn. A favorite place to stay for celebrities and other notables, the Thornhedge Inn is often recognized as “The Best Place to Stay in Bar Harbor.” This century-old B&B has rooms equipped with fireplaces and balconies, to ensure a perfect romantic getaway.
  • Saltair Inn Bed and Breakfast. This waterfront, four-season B&B is nestled on the coast of Frenchman Bay. If you are looking for luxury accommodations at an affordable price, this is the ideal location.
  • Ivy Manor Inn. Modern luxuries and conveniences coupled with old-world charm in an environment that practices an “unhurried pace” makes for an ideal hotel destination.

Bar Harbor allows couples to explore the stunning landscapes of Acadia National Park, savor fresh seafood, and experience the warm and welcoming coastal atmosphere of this charming Maine town.

3. Nantucket, Massachusetts

Nantucket hits different. This island thirty miles off Cape Cod has nailed the perfect balance of old-money charm and genuine romance without trying too hard about it.

Summer here is incredible. Rent bikes and cruise through Sconset, where rose-covered cottages look like they’ve been plucked from a postcard. Cisco Beach stretches for miles with sand so soft you’ll want to stay until the stars come out. Hit up Cru for oysters and harbor views, or grab a bottle of wine and find your own private stretch of coastline.

Nantucket’s small-town charm is perfect for couples traveling together.

Fall is when Nantucket gets really good. The summer crowds disappear, cranberry bogs turn this amazing deep red, and suddenly you have the whole island to yourselves. The Pearl serves some of the best seafood I’ve ever had, and wandering Main Street’s historic captain houses feels like you’re exploring your own private movie set.

What makes Nantucket work? It’s authentic. No fake charm or tourist traps. You can spend the morning poking around Centre Street shops, sail in the afternoon, then enjoy dinner where the hardest choice is between the lobster roll or day boat scallops. For these reasons, it’s absolutely one of my favorite New England weekend spots.

Beach Hair Don’t Care…or maybe you do.  Here are the perfect places to relax and recharge after a long day on this romantic island.

  • White Elephant Hotel. This iconic hotel boasts the perfect Nantucket experience. An optional romantic package includes champagne, dinner, and a sunset cruise around the island.
  • Blue Iris by Life House. If art inspires you, Blue Iris sets the perfect stage for an overnight stay. The seaside design of this romantic getaway was inspired by the original owner of the house, a renowned Patroness of the Arts from the late 1800s.
  • Jared Coffin House. This landmark, three-story mansion-turned-hotel has a unique way of bringing together the past and present. It offers the elegance of historic Nantucket in a cozy setting. You just may decide to stay in for the night!

Journey to Nantucket to enjoy the island’s timeless beauty, pristine beaches, and quaint New England charm! It’s the perfect setting for a relaxing getaway, which is why we love visiting here so much.

4. Savannah, Georgia

Savannah is basically Southern charm on steroids, and I mean that in the best possible way. This Georgia city has been perfecting the art of romance for over 300 years, and it shows in every moss-draped corner.

Walking through the Historic District feels like stumbling into someone else’s love story. Those massive oak trees create natural canopies over cobblestone streets, and the wrought-iron balconies practically whisper “climb up here and propose already.” Forsyth Park isn’t just pretty…it’s where locals have been falling in love since 1851. And not far away, you can enjoy dinner at one of Savannah’s most charming restaurants.

History and beauty help make Savannah one of the most romantic getaways on the East Coast.

Spring hits different here. Azaleas absolutely explode throughout the city’s 24 squares, turning every street into a pink-and-white paradise. Summer evenings are made for rooftop drinks at Cotton Sail Hotel, where the humidity somehow makes everything feel more intimate. Even winter has this cozy appeal when you’re sharing shrimp and grits at The Grey.

What really gets me about Savannah? The city refuses to be rushed. You’ll find yourself wandering Chippewa Square for hours, then ending up on River Street (one of the best nightlife spots) with a cocktail in hand, wondering how you got so lucky. Those ghost tours don’t hurt either…nothing like a little supernatural mystery to set the mood. It’s one of the best places in Georgia to visit, especially if you’re seeking a romantic hotel on the East Coast.

5. The Pocono Mountains, Pennsylvania

The Pocono Mountains are one of the East Coast’s most romantic escapes, especially if you’re into cozy cabins, waterfall hikes, and lake house rentals. Best visited in fall for peak foliage or in winter for a snowy retreat, the Poconos offer a little of everything.

Head to Jim Thorpe for charming streets, Victorian inns, and scenic train rides through Lehigh Gorge. Hawley is another gem, perfect for lakeside stays on Lake Wallenpaupack or spa days at The Lodge at Woodloch.

The Pocono Mountains offer some of the most stunning landscapes in Pennsylvania, making it one of the most romantic getaways on the East Coast.

You can hike to Bushkill Falls (aka the “Niagara of Pennsylvania”), kayak on the Delaware River, or just unwind in a hot tub with mountain views. When my wife and I went, we booked a cabin with a fireplace and spent the evenings stargazing with wine in hand…total bliss.

If you’re chasing adventure or just want to slow down together, the Poconos deliver that perfect romantic mix of nature, charm, and peace.

6. The Outer Banks, North Carolina

The Outer Banks is one of the most romantic getaways on the East Coast, especially if you love wide-open beaches, dreamy sunsets, and quiet coastal towns. The best time to visit is late spring or early fall….perfect weather, fewer crowds, and more affordable stays.

Duck and Corolla are two of the most romantic towns, with upscale beach homes, boutique shops, and wild horses roaming the dunes. Take a sunset sail, climb the Currituck Beach Lighthouse, or just walk barefoot along the shoreline at golden hour.

When my wife and I stayed in Duck, we watched the sunrise from our deck every morning…it was simple but unforgettable. There’s truly nothing better than staying in a vacation home in the Outer Banks, especially in late summer, early fall.

Whether you’re biking through maritime forests or enjoying a seafood dinner by the water, the Outer Banks makes it easy to slow down and reconnect. It’s that laid-back coastal vibe that turns a regular trip into something really special. The beauty of the Outer Banks is unmatched!

7. St. Augustine, Florida

St. Augustine is America’s oldest city, and honestly, it feels like it’s been practicing romance for all 450+ years. This Florida gem has mastered the art of old-world charm with just enough quirky Florida weirdness to keep things interesting.

As America's oldest city, St. Augustine is vibrant with historic beauty and one of the best places for a romantic getaway on the east coast
As America’s oldest city, St. Augustine is vibrant with historic beauty.

The Historic District is absolutely magical. Narrow brick streets wind past Spanish colonial buildings that look like they belong in a fairytale, while Castillo de San Marcos provides incredible sunset views over Matanzas Bay. My wife and I spent an entire afternoon getting lost in St. George Street’s shops and cafes, and somehow that became one of our favorite travel memories. And don’t even get me started on the nightlife in St. Augustine.

What makes St. Augustine special? The layers of history create this incredible atmosphere. You can tour the Lightner Museum in the morning, take a horse-drawn carriage ride through Aviles Street (America’s oldest street), then end up at The Ice Plant Bar for craft cocktails in a converted ice manufacturing plant.

Spring and fall are perfect here when the weather’s ideal for wandering. Summer gets hot but those evening ghost tours through the lamplit streets are absolutely enchanting. Flagler College’s campus is stunning year-round, and the food scene along St. George Street keeps getting better. It’s authentic history mixed with genuine romance, no Disney-fication required.

8. Newport, Rhode Island

The peaceful seaside paradise of Newport makes for a memorably romantic East Coast getaway.

Newport has become our go-to romantic escape from Boston, and after visiting several times over the years, I can honestly say it never gets old. This Rhode Island coastal town has perfected the art of old-money elegance without the stuffiness that usually comes with it. It’s a great weekend getaway spot for that reason!

The Gilded Age mansions along Bellevue Avenue are absolutely incredible. Walking through The Breakers or Marble House feels like stepping into another era entirely, and the ocean views from these “summer cottages” are unreal. But what really gets me is the Cliff Walk that connects them all. Three and a half miles of oceanfront path where you can peek into mansion gardens while waves crash below.

Summer is prime time here. Thames Street comes alive with waterfront dining, and there’s something magical about sharing lobster rolls at The Black Pearl while watching sailboats drift past. Fall brings fewer crowds and cozy dinners at Castle Hill Inn, where the sunset views over Narragansett Bay are phenomenal.

Newport works because it’s got serious history but doesn’t take itself too seriously. You can tour million-dollar mansions in the morning, then spend the afternoon antiquing on Spring Street or just wandering the harbor watching America’s Cup boats.

Sit along the shore of Narragansett Bay and rest your head on your partner’s shoulder.

Where to stay in Newport

After a full day of appreciating the absolute beauty of Newport, it’s time to head back to the hotel and get ready for whatever the evening brings.  Whether it’s an elegant dinner, spa treatments, or a quiet evening alone with your partner, you’ll find it in one of these hidden gems in the US.
