Cozy Cabin at Frog Pond Farm is a 500-square-foot passive solar cabin on a small farm in Jamaica, Vermont, down a rural dirt road. Sleeping is split between a bedroom with a queen and a loft with two futons, and house rules cap the stay at four guests. South-facing windows keep the interior bright, and you get a reading nook, a Vermont Castings wood stove, heated floors, a full kitchen, and GOTS certified organic cotton sheets and towels.
The screened porch is roomy and where I'd spend the better part of an afternoon, with a fire pit out in the side yard and gardens for after dark. Brian and his family live next door and keep chickens and ducks in their own large runs, and for much of the year guests go home with fresh eggs. They do garden and animal work in the yard during the growing season, though they give guests plenty of space while they're at it.
Stratton Mountain is about a 10-minute drive, with Mount Snow and Dover 20 minutes out for skiing, shopping, or a beer at Snow Republic. Four ski areas sit within 30 minutes, along with Jamaica State Park, hiking on the Appalachian and Long Trail, walks beside Ball Mountain Brook, and kayaking at Grout Pond and Gale Meadows. Manchester and its outlets are 30 minutes away, and one thing to know before booking is that the Wi-Fi comes from Starlink with no guarantee of speed, while Verizon cell service works well here and AT&T does not.

Cathedral Ledge View Chalet is an A-frame chalet in North Conway, New Hampshire, sitting inside a small association a mile and a half from the village. Sleeping is split between a downstairs bedroom with a queen and an upstairs loft with two full-size beds, and the single bathroom has a large tiled stand-up shower. The kitchen has stainless steel appliances and granite countertops along with both a pot-style coffee maker and a Keurig, and the living area is built around a fireplace insert with a glass front and a 50-inch smart TV.
The deck is large and faces Cathedral Ledge head-on, set up with a gas grill and a patio table for dinner outside. Morning coffee out there watching climbers work their way up the cliff is my favorite part of this place. There's an outdoor fire pit as well, plus air conditioning on both floors, a new heating system, and high-speed Wi-Fi.
Echo Lake State Park is a one-minute walk from the door, the Cathedral Ledge Lookout is 11 minutes on foot, and the lake beach is 18. White Mountain National Forest trails start close by, North Conway Village and its restaurants and shops are a 5-minute drive, Cranmore Mountain Resort is about the same, Attitash Mountain Resort is 10 minutes, and Story Land is 15. If you want to use the fire pit, pull a burn permit first at nh.burnsafeamerica.com.
24. Cedar Heights Treehouse, Newport, Vermont

The custom cedar hot tub sits under the trees and stays open year-round, 24 hours a day, with no gate or lock on it. Indoors you get a projector for movie nights, a record player, a sun room, and a TV loaded with Apple TV, Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max, and Disney+. I'd happily lose an entire evening going back and forth between the tub and the projector without touching the car keys.
Jay Peak is 20 minutes away for skiing, while Newport town and Lake Memphremagog are both around 15. The VAST snowmobile trail is minutes from the property, East Burke is 40 minutes out for mountain biking, Stowe is an hour, and the Canadian border sits 30 minutes north. Two things to plan around: Wi-Fi here handles streaming and browsing but isn't high speed, and the hosts advise an AWD vehicle for winter stays even though the driveway gets plowed.

Oversized windows wrap the upper level, and the light coming through the leaves in the morning is the best reason to wake up early here.
Every dwelling at the retreat has its own hot tub and its own dock, which is rare for a property renting five places at once. The kitchen is fully outfitted with a gas stove, dishwasher, and microwave, and the dining area seats six under an antler chandelier.
The wood stove is the heart of the place, and after a day on the trails it turns the whole cabin warm in about twenty minutes. Outside there are two decks, a gas barbecue, and a fire pit, plus a mud room built for ski storage so wet boots never make it past the door. My favorite detail is the chiming cuckoo clock, which sounds ridiculous until you've spent an evening with it and the Black Forest antiques filling the room.
Stowe village is a mile away, with the Gold Brook Covered Bridge a 3-minute drive and The Current: A Center for Contemporary Art at 4 minutes. Stowe Mountain Resort is 18 minutes out, Mount Mansfield and the skiing sit 8 miles from the door, and the Pinnacle trailhead is a few miles up the road. Alchemist Brewery is a 9-minute drive, and skiers can skip the resort lot entirely by catching the mountain shuttle from the Town Building on Main Street and parking behind the white church.

I'd take one clear October night in that hot tub over a hotel with a view any day.
The cabin sits in the forest around Mount Agamenticus, with the trail system starting off the road out front. Ogunquit and the York beaches are a short drive, and the outlets at Kittery are close by. Portsmouth, Dover, and Portland all sit within reach for dinner, and with only two guests allowed and a 4 PM check-in, this one books up far ahead.
