If you’d like to visit the most beautiful part of the Alps, flying into Zurich is your best bet. As the largest city in Switzerland, Zurich is seamlessly connected to the rest of the country via public transportation. There are lots of awesome day trips nearby, too!

15. Frankfurt, Germany
Some of the cheapest flights to Europe from the US go through Frankfurt. This German metropolis is more than just a global financial hub; it’s a city teeming with art, history, and culinary delights. Expect to pay between $470 and $650 for a roundtrip fare from large US airports; the cheaper flights tend to have layovers, while the pricier ones are non-stop flights with Lufthansa and Singapore Airlines.
Having traveled extensively throughout Germany, I can’t say that Frankfurt is one of my favorite places to visit. However, it will get you close to popular destinations like Heidelberg, Würzburg, and Rothenburg ob der Tauber. The northernmost point of the Romantic Road, a top tourist route in Germany, isn’t far away. And you’ll also be within reach of Rhine River sightseeing cruises, which depart from the Rhine Gorge and Mannheim. Saving money to Europe has never been so easy!

It’s also the fashion capital of the world, and it shows. You can spend a week here and barely scratch the surface, so be sure to give yourself plenty of time to explore one of Europe’s prettiest cities!

18. Milan, Italy
From time to time, American travelers can find amazing flight deals to Milan. This is Italy’s capital of fashion and finance and a gateway to Lake Como.
Big cities like NYC have daily non-stop flights to Milan via American Airlines, Delta, and Alitalia. Even in smaller cities like Burlington, VT, and Louisville, KY, it’s not uncommon to find cheap flights throughout the year.
The best deals in 2026 range from $415-$830 roundtrip. As is the case with most European destinations, the cheapest time to fly to Milan is in the winter (January and February).
Milan is the fashion capital of the world, as it’s home to countless high-end designer and luxury stores. But a trip to Milan isn’t complete without a visit to its grandiose gothic cathedral, the Duomo di Milano, and its sprawling restaurant scene. The surrounding Lombardy region also deserves a visit.

⚠️ 2026 Winter Olympics Warning: Northern Italy (Milan & Cortina) is hosting the Winter Olympics from February 6-22, 2026. Unless you have tickets to the games, avoid flying into Milan (MXP) in February. Prices will be astronomical. Instead, I recommend flying into Rome or Bologna and take the high-speed train north after the games end.

From the Hagia Sophia to the bustling bazaars, Istanbul has it all. The city’s a blend of Byzantine, Ottoman, and modern influences – making it super dynamic.

20. Cork, Ireland

If you want the absolute lowest price possible in 2026, ignore the standard advice. With the budget airline landscape shifting, here is the specific route I am recommending to all my subscribers this year:
The “Norse & Rail” Strategy:
1. The Entry: Book a flight on Norse Atlantic Airways. They consistently offer the lowest base fares from NYC, LA, and Miami into major hubs like London Gatwick (LGW) or Paris (CDG).
2. The Pivot: Do not book a connecting flight. Instead, switch to the rail network immediately. The new European sleeper trains can get you from Paris/London to almost anywhere in Central Europe for under €50 if booked 3 months out.
The Alternative: If you want to break up the journey, Icelandair remains the king of value. While their base fare is slightly higher than Norse, their “Free Stopover” program (up to 7 days in Iceland at no extra airfare) essentially gives you two vacations for the price of one.
