#1 tip for finding cheap flights in the summer

Looking for cheap flights tis summer? Before jumping into all the best cities and airports to fly into, I want to share a quick tip to save money on airfare.

For the past 3 years, I’ve used Scott’s Cheap Flights (now Going) to find amazing flight deals. All you have to do is enter in your home airport and where you want to go, and they’ll send you mistake fares and other ridiculously cheap flight deals. And the best part? It’s FREE!

In 2022 alone, I saved thousands of dollars thanks to their email alerts. This includes most recently, a $246 roundtrip fare from Boston to Paris. On average, I save over $350 roundtrip on transatlantic flights and $200 on domestic ones. So, I couldn’t recommend them more!

If you’re a frequent traveler, consider getting their premium version. It costs $49 per year, but it will easily save you hundreds (or thousands) of dollars if you fly just 1-2 times. I recommend signing up for the free trial (which you can cancel at any time) to test it out for yourself.

Other considerations when finding cheap places to fly to over the summer

To find the cheapest places to fly in the summer, I limited my search from major airports in the US. Sure, some small airports can have decent flight options. However, more likely than not, you’ll be connecting at a larger US airport (i.e., Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, LA, or NYC) before heading somewhere internationally (or elsewhere in the US).

As such, it’s more practical to use data from larger US airports, which handle the vast majority of domestic and international flights. Smaller airports have fewer daily flights and higher variability in prices. So, it doesn’t make sense to include them when analyzing the cheapest places to fly this summer.

Note that prices can vary immensely between different U.S. cities. For example, a flight to Reykjavik will cost more if you’re traveling from the west coast vs. east coast. If you’re looking to visit Europe or South America from a secondary airport like Oakland CA, you may have to connect somewhere and pay a little more. Or, you’ll fly out of San Francisco instead. The price of a roundtrip fare may be different, but the cheapest destinations to fly over the summer should remain the same.

One other important point: because July is considered the most expensive month to travel, most of the flights in this article are applicable to that month. As such, these aren’t just the best cheap flight over the summer, they are the cheapest places to fly in July!

From the tropics to the Arctic Circle, here are the cheapest places to fly to in the summer of 2023.

Looking to save BIG on airfare? I recommend signing up for Dollar Flight Club. Thanks to DFC, I saved $5,000+ on travel in 2023…so I couldn’t recommend it more!

Do flight prices go down in summer?

Yes and no, it depends! Summer is a popular time for travel, with many people taking vacations and visiting family, so airfare prices can often go up during this period. However, that’s not always the case! Airlines and flight booking sites often offer special deals and promotions during the summer months to entice travelers. So, it’s possible to find good deals on flights during this time.

One thing to keep in mind is that prices can vary greatly depending on the destination, with some popular summer destinations having higher airfare prices compared to others. Additionally, the cost of airfare can also vary depending on the time of year and day of the week. For example, flights on weekends and during peak travel periods (such as holidays) tend to be more expensive.

So, while flight prices may not necessarily go down during the summer, there are still ways to find deals and save on airfare. By being flexible with your travel dates and keeping an eye out for promotions, you may be able to score a great deal on your summer flight!

What are the cheapest days of the week to fly in the summer?

For cheap flights this summer, mark your calendars for Tuesdays and Wednesdays! These midweek days are often the cheapest to fly during the summer months. Why, you ask? It’s all about demand. With many travelers opting for long weekend getaways or week-long vacations that start on a Friday or Saturday, midweek flights often see less demand, leading to lower prices.

But that’s not all. Flying midweek doesn’t just save you money, it can also offer a more relaxed travel experience. With fewer people at the airport, you can breeze through security and maybe even score that coveted window seat. Cheap flights in July are made even better with this travel hack.

What day is cheapest to fly in August?

Ha! If only there was a simple answer to this question! The truth is, there is no set day that is the cheapest to fly in August. Airfare prices are determined by a multitude of factors, including demand, competition, and the airline’s own pricing strategies.

So, if you’re hoping to find the cheapest day to fly in August, you might as well try to find a unicorn or a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. But hey, if you do happen to stumble upon a magical cheap flight, consider yourself lucky!

In all seriousness, the best way to find affordable airfare is to be flexible with your travel dates, book in advance, and keep an eye out for promotions and deals. Happy hunting!

But there are still deals to be found. Midweek flights, as I mentioned earlier, can often be cheaper. And if you’re willing to fly at less popular times (think early morning or late night), you might snag a bargain.

Plus, remember that summer in one part of the world is winter in another. So if you’re open to off-season travel, you could find cheaper flights and fewer crowds.
