Looking for a beach escape that won’t destroy your savings? After spending countless hours researching flights (and making plenty of booking mistakes), I’ve discovered some incredible tropical destinations that are actually affordable to reach. Trust me, you won’t need to eat ramen for months to afford these paradise getaways.
These are the best places in the tropics to find reasonable flights, and I’m excited to share my findings. Last month, I snagged an amazing deal to Aruba and spent my days between the calm waters of Eagle Beach and the colorful streets of Oranjestad, all for less than a weekend at a fancy resort. Here are 9 sun-soaked destinations that prove paradise doesn’t have to break the bank
#1 tip for finding cheap flights to tropical places
Finding cheap flights can be a challenge no matter where you’re going. But thankfully, it’s getting easier to save big on airfare thanks to one of my favorite flight deal sites, Scott’s Cheap Flights (now called Going).
Before you book anything, don’t miss these deals 👇
- ✈️ Find cheap flights you won't see on Google – Going.com finds mistake fares and flash sales I use to save $200+ per ticket
- 🏨 Book your stay – Great deals on boutique hotels, apartments and vacation homes
- 🚗 Score cheap car rentals – Compare top companies in one spot
- 🎟️ Explore top-rated tours and activities – Skip the line and explore more
For the last 5 years, I’ve used this free email subscription service to find discounted flights. All you gotta do is enter your home airport and where you want to go, and they’ll send you mistake fares and other ultra cheap flight deals. This year alone, I’ve saved over $4,500 due to their email alerts. This includes most recently, a $179 roundtrip fare from Boston to Puerto Rico.
I’m talking hundreds of dollars saved on roundtrip tickets to places such as Mexico, Puerto Rico, and many tropical island locations around the world. I also recently flew from Boston to Cancun for less than $100. I’ve scored plenty of other cheap flights to tropical places using Going, as well. Believe me, when you’re making the tropics your destination, getting bargains on flights goes a long way for your wallet.
The prices you pay for tropical flights depends on a number of factors. This includes the specific location, the airline, and the time of year you’re going. But with Going’s free email service–or its $49/year premium membership, which shows you more cheap flights, more often–you can be sure you’re getting the best flight to wherever you’re going.

Palawan proves you don’t need to empty your savings for a tropical paradise getaway. This Filipino island chain delivers insane value once you’re there, with budget-friendly accommodations, cheap island tours, and meals that cost less than your morning Starbucks run.

El Nido‘s island-hopping tours will have you jumping off boats into secret lagoons that feel like you’ve teleported into a desktop wallpaper, while the Underground River lets you float through pitch-black caves where stalactites hang so low you’ll duck to avoid a limestone haircut. Book the earliest morning slot for Kayangan Lake in Coron and you’ll get that iconic viewpoint shot without 50 other tourists cramming into your frame.
Flying here takes some work. You’ll land in Manila first, then either splurge on a direct flight to El Nido via AirSWIFTor save cash by flying to Puerto Princesa (then grabbing a van for 4 hours). For Coron, look for flights to Busuanga Airport.

The Dominican Republic is basically the Caribbean on easy mode. This island nation delivers those postcard-perfect beaches and crystal-clear waters without the sky-high prices of its neighbors, plus it’s ridiculously accessible with direct flights from dozens of US cities.

Punta Cana‘s beaches are so perfect they look fake with sand so white it blinds you and water so blue it makes the sky jealous. Over in Santo Domingo, the colonial zone is like time-traveling to 500 years ago but with better cocktails and WiFi. The real thrill comes at the 27 waterfalls of Damajagua where you can channel your inner daredevil by jumping off cliffs into emerald pools while screaming your face off, all for less than what you’d drop on a night out back home.
Flying here is super easy. Tons of direct flights from the U.S. land at Punta Cana or Santo Domingo, and you can often score deals under $300 roundtrip. Time your visit in May for that perfect beach weather and lesser crowds.
✈️ Pro Travel Tip:
I use Going.com to find crazy flight deals — think $300 roundtrip to Europe kind of crazy.

But the real highlight? The underwater scene. Grab a snorkel mask at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park in Key Largo and swim through actual shipwrecks and coral gardens teeming with fish sporting colors so bright they look fake.

Hike up to Sete Cidades where twin lakes (one blue, one green) fill an ancient volcano crater, then soak in natural hot springs at Furnas where locals cook traditional stew underground using volcanic heat. The surf spots near Santa Barbara beach will make you feel like you discovered them yourself, with barely another soul in sight most days.
Getting here is shockingly affordable. Azores Airlines offers direct flights to Ponta Delgada for around $400 roundtrip during their sales, while TAP Portugal frequently runs flash deals as low as $350 if you’re willing to connect through Lisbon.

Cozumel is that perfect Mexican island escape without the Cancun chaos or Tulum price tags. This laid-back paradise sits right off the Yucatan Peninsula with some of the clearest waters in the Caribbean.

Palancar Reef is basically underwater heaven with visibility so good you can see forever and coral formations that will make your jaw drop. Balos Beach looks straight out of a fantasy with its turquoise lagoon and pink-tinged sand, while the ancient ruins of Knossos Palace let you walk through actual 4,000-year-old Minoan history. Frequently asked questions (FAQs) about finding cheap flights to tropical places
You’ve probably noticed that the tropics are expansive – covering a wide range of coastal places and islands around the world. So if you want to find best cheap flights to tropical places, here are some frequently asked questions to consider.
What is the cheapest tropical island to fly to?
The cheapest tropical island to fly to can vary based on several factors, including your departure city, the time of year, current flight deals, and geopolitical events. However, in general, some tropical islands are often more affordable to fly to due to frequent flight deals, budget airline routes, or their proximity to major travel hubs. Here are a few tropical destinations that often feature affordable flight options:
- Bali, Indonesia: Especially from Australian cities and some parts of Asia.
- Phuket or Koh Samui, Thailand: Accessible with budget airlines from various Asian hubs.
- Puerto Rico: Especially from the eastern United States.
- Dominican Republic: Many U.S. and European airlines offer competitive rates.
- Cancun, Mexico: A major hub that’s frequently serviced by budget airlines from the U.S. and Canada.
- Jamaica: Montego Bay, in particular, sees a lot of charter flights from the U.S. and Canada.
- Fiji: Especially from Australia and New Zealand.
Where can you get direct flights to the tropics?
I mentioned above that many tropical destinations are a bit too remote for direct flights from major airport hubs. If making lots of connections and taking seaplanes isn’t your thing, you may prefer to fly to a tropical place nonstop.
Depending on where you’re going, you can definitely find nonstop flights to tropical locations, even island countries. I’ve broken down some of the most popular U.S.-originating options for you below.

What is the cheapest tropical place to visit?
The tropics of the world encompass so much diversity, from the mainstream appeal of Cancún to the lesser-known tropical destinations of Southeast Asia. However, if you’re looking for the cheapest tropical destinations to fly to right now, I have to recommend Cozumel in Mexico or Palawan in the Philippines.
You can get a flight from Miami to Cozumel for about $250, while, if you’re already in Manila, you can fly to El Nido on the island of Palawan for a little more than $100 or so. Cozumel and Palawan also share extreme affordability of accommodations, with hotel rooms reaching lows of $7-$21 a night.
Those prices, combined with the gorgeous sandy beaches and blue tropical waters of each island, make Cozumel and Palawan among the cheapest tropical places to visit.

How far in advance should I book a flight to the tropics?
Everyone wants cheap flights to tropical places. While some inexperienced travelers might feel that waiting until the last possible moment will land you the best rates, this isn’t always the case.
Whether you’re flying to the Caribbean or anywhere else in the tropics, booking between two and eight months ahead of time will always be a safe window. However, you can get by just fine with booking between one and three months in advance.
When is the cheapest time to fly to the tropics?
Winter in the Northern Hemisphere is summer in the Southern Hemisphere. That makes the months of December to March a popular period to schedule tropical vacations. The December holidays are a particularly busy time for tropical resorts in the Caribbean and elsewhere, and you’ll find higher rates on everything in that period.
If you want to avoid higher prices and crowds of tourists, you’ll want to fly to your tropical destination of choice between April and November. Within that time frame, September to November is probably the cheapest time to fly to the tropics. You may put up with a few more rainy and overcast days during those months, but it could mean huge cost savings on airfare and accochmmodations. If those benefits mean a lot to you, then maybe a fall trip is on your horizon!
Cheapest tropical flights: Recap
In the ever-evolving world of travel, finding hidden gems with the best prices is the ultimate win. From the untouched beauty of the Azores to the rich tapestry of Crete, there are tropical destinations that offer both allure and affordability.
