9 AFFORDABLE Tropical Destinations You Can Fly to in 2026

by Jon Miksis

Looking for a beach escape that won’t destroy your savings? After spending countless hours researching flights (and making plenty of booking mistakes), I’ve discovered some incredible tropical destinations that are actually affordable to reach. Trust me, you won’t need to eat ramen for months to afford these paradise getaways.

These are the best places in the tropics to find reasonable flights, and I’m excited to share my findings. Last month, I snagged an amazing deal to Aruba and spent my days between the calm waters of Eagle Beach and the colorful streets of Oranjestad, all for less than a weekend at a fancy resort. Here are 9 sun-soaked destinations that prove paradise doesn’t have to break the bank

Southwest Bag Fees Rose April 2026

Heads up if you’re eyeing Southwest for the Keys, Oahu, Nassau, Cozumel, or Puerto Rico. Its old Bags Fly Free perk ended in May 2025, and fees went up again on April 9, 2026 to $45 for the first checked bag and $55 for the second, each way per person. Open seating is gone too as of January 27, 2026, so build a checked bag or a Rapid Rewards card into your math before you assume Southwest is the cheapest way to these islands.

Top Cheap Flight Destinations to Tropical Places in 2026

Looking for cheap flight destinations to tropical places? Visit Palawan, Philippines for crystal-clear lagoons and stunning limestone cliffs, Dominican Republic for pristine beaches and vibrant nightlife, Florida Keys for scenic drives and water adventures, and The Azores, Portugal for breathtaking landscapes and volcanic hot springs. Whether you’re interested in history, culture, or cuisine, these destinations offer budget-friendly getaways to tropical paradise.

Cheap flights to exotic places right now

1. Palawan, Philippines

  • 💵 Typical Roundtrip Price: $750–$1,100 from major U.S. cities
  • ✈️ Flight Time: 16-22 hours
  • 🛫 Airlines: Philippine Airlines, EVA Air, ANA, Cathay Pacific
  • 📅 Best Time to Visit: November to May ☀️ (dry season)
  • 🏝️ Perfect For: Island-hoppers 🏊‍♂️, scuba divers 🤿, and travelers craving untouched beaches 🌊

Palawan proves you don’t need to empty your savings for a tropical paradise getaway. This Filipino island chain delivers insane value once you’re there, with budget-friendly accommodations, cheap island tours, and meals that cost less than your morning Starbucks run.

Views like this are all over in Palawan, Philippines

El Nido‘s island-hopping tours will have you jumping off boats into secret lagoons that feel like you’ve teleported into a desktop wallpaper, while the Underground River lets you float through pitch-black caves where stalactites hang so low you’ll duck to avoid a limestone haircut. Book the earliest morning slot for Kayangan Lake in Coron and you’ll get that iconic viewpoint shot without 50 other tourists cramming into your frame.

Flying here takes some work. You’ll land in Manila first, then either splurge on a direct flight to El Nido via AirSWIFTor save cash by flying to Puerto Princesa (then grabbing a van for 4 hours). When traveling to Coron, look for flights to Busuanga Airport.

2. Dominican Republic

  • 💵 Typical Roundtrip Price: $250–$350 from major U.S. cities
  • ✈️ Flight Time from U.S.: 3-5 hours (direct flights available)
  • 🛫 Airlines: JetBlue, American, Delta, Spirit, Frontier
  • 📅 Best Time to Visit: November to April (dry season) and May (shoulder season deals)
  • 🏝️ Perfect For: Beach bums, all-inclusive lovers, and adventure travelers

The Dominican Republic is basically the Caribbean on easy mode. This island nation delivers those postcard-perfect beaches and crystal-clear waters without the sky-high prices of its neighbors, plus it’s ridiculously accessible with direct flights from dozens of US cities.

The Dominican Republic is a cheap tropical getaway to beaches like this one.

Punta Cana‘s beaches are so perfect they look fake with sand so white it blinds you and water so blue it makes the sky jealous. Over in Santo Domingo, the colonial zone is like time-traveling to 500 years ago but with better cocktails and WiFi. The real thrill comes at the 27 waterfalls of Damajagua where you can channel your inner daredevil by jumping off cliffs into emerald pools while screaming your face off, all for less than what you’d drop on a night out back home.

Flying here is super easy. Tons of direct flights from the U.S. land at Punta Cana or Santo Domingo, and you can often score deals under $300 roundtrip. Time your visit in May for that perfect beach weather and lesser crowds.

3. Florida Keys

  • 💵 Typical Roundtrip Price: $180–$500 from major U.S. cities
  • ✈️ Flight Time from U.S.: 2-5 hours (direct to Miami or Key West)
  • 🛫 Best Airlines: American Airlines, Delta, United, Southwest
  • 📅 Best Time to Visit: November to May ☀️ (dry season)
  • 🏝️ Perfect for: Road trippers 🚗, snorkelers 🐠, and sunset chasers 🌅

Florida Keys bring tropical paradise without needing a passport or currency exchange. This string of islands connected by the iconic Overseas Highway delivers Caribbean vibes with domestic flight prices.

Consider the Florida Keys when you’re looking for cheap flights to tropical destinations.

Key West is where things get wild with bars on Duval Street that stay open till 4am and the legendary sunset celebration at Mallory Square where fire-eaters and tightrope walkers do their thing while the sun melts into the ocean. But the real highlight? The underwater scene. Grab a snorkel mask at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park in Key Largo and swim through actual shipwrecks and coral gardens teeming with fish sporting colors so bright they look fake.

Fly into Miami on budget airlines like Spirit or Frontier. Roundtrip fares often dip under $200 if you book early. From there, rent a car and cruise the Overseas Highway. Prefer to skip the drive? Flights into Key West usually cost about $100 more but land you right in the heart of the action.

4. The Azores, Portugal

  • 💵 Typical Roundtrip Price: $350–$500 from major U.S. cities
  • ✈️ Flight Time from U.S.: 5-7 hours (direct from Boston)
  • 🛫 Best Airlines: Azores Airlines, TAP Portugal, United
  • 📅 Best Time to Visit: June to September ☀️ (warm season)
  • 🏝️ Perfect for: Nature lovers 🌋, hikers 🥾, and adventure seekers 🏊‍♂️

The Azores are Europe’s best-kept budget travel secret. This Portuguese island chain sitting in the middle of the Atlantic gives you Hawaii-level volcanic landscapes without the Hawaii-level prices or crowds.

✈️ How I Fly for a Fraction of the Price (Even Business Class)

Airfare keeps climbing, but I almost never pay full price. Going.com emails me roundtrips to Europe for under $350. With Elite, you’ll even see business class to Europe for ~$1,700 (deals you won’t find on Google Flights).

Planning a big trip? Elite members save up to $2,000 on a single international business-class ticket. I’ve seen nonstop biz to Scotland for $1,250.

It is easy to see why they call this place the green island.

São Miguel, the main island, is like someone stuffed all the world’s coolest nature into one place. Hike up to Sete Cidades where twin lakes (one blue, one green) fill an ancient volcano crater, then soak in natural hot springs at Furnas where locals cook traditional stew underground using volcanic heat. The surf spots near Santa Barbara beach will make you feel like you discovered them yourself, with barely another soul in sight most days.

Getting here is shockingly affordable. Azores Airlines offers direct flights to Ponta Delgada for around $400 roundtrip during their sales, while TAP Portugal frequently runs flash deals as low as $350 if you’re willing to connect through Lisbon.

5. Oahu, Hawaii

  • 💵 Typical Roundtrip Price: $250–$450 from major U.S. cities
  • ✈️ Flight Time from U.S.: 5-10 hours (direct from West Coast)
  • 🛫 Best Airlines: Hawaiian Airlines, Southwest, Alaska, United
  • 📅 Best Time to Visit: April to June, September to November 🌴 (shoulder seasons)
  • 🏝️ Perfect for: Beach bums 🏄‍♀️, hikers 🥾, and first-time Hawaii visitors 🌺

Oahu brings those picture-perfect Hawaii vibes at prices that won’t make your bank account cry. This island might be home to Honolulu, but there’s way more to it than just Waikiki Beach and tourist traps.

An asphalt road lined with palm trees leading toward steep, green volcanic mountains covered in mist
Oahu should top your list of cheap flights to tropical places.

North Shore is where you’ll find those massive waves you’ve seen on surf videos. You can also hit up Lanikai Beach for the clearest turquoise water and that classic postcard shot of the offshore islands. For an adventure that costs zero dollars, hike up to Diamond Head crater for sunrise or tackle the more challenging Koko Head Stairs if you want thighs of steel and epic panoramic views.

Flying here is surprisingly cheap. Southwest and Alaska often battle it out with $250-300 roundtrip fares from the West Coast, especially if you score their flash sales that pop up every couple months.

6. Nassau, Bahamas

  • 💵 Typical Roundtrip Price: $100–$300 from major U.S. cities
  • ✈️ Flight Time from U.S.: 1-3 hours (direct from East Coast)
  • 🛫 Best Airlines: JetBlue, American, Southwest, Bahamasair
  • 📅 Best Time to Visit: November to April ☀️ (dry season)
  • 🏝️ Perfect for: Beach lovers 🏖️, snorkelers 🤿, and weekend escapes 🧳

Nassau delivers that Caribbean paradise vibe without destroying your bank account. This Bahamian hotspot is basically the definition of affordable tropical getaway with flights so cheap you’ll think there’s a mistake.

Nassau in the Bahamas is a cheap tropical place to fly to.

Cable Beach stretches for miles with powder-white sand and that impossibly clear turquoise water the Bahamas is famous for. Head to Junkanoo Beach when you want more action, with beachfront bars serving rum punch for $5 and locals organizing impromptu beach volleyball games. The real underwater magic happens at Rose Island Reef, where you can snorkel through coral gardens packed with tropical fish that look like they’re straight out of Finding Nemo.

JetBlue and Southwest frequently run flash sales with $99 one-way fares from Florida, while American often drops prices to around $250 roundtrip from cities like New York and Chicago. The best deals usually pop up for travel dates in September and October, though you might catch some rain showers.

✈️ How I keep catching sub-$300 flights to the tropics

Going’s Premium plan ($49/year) is how I catch most of the fares in this guide, including that $179 roundtrip from Boston to Puerto Rico and Caribbean deals that slip under $200 when the flash sales hit. If you ever want to fly one of these routes up front instead, Elite ($199/year) layers in business and premium economy alerts too.

7. Cozumel, Mexico

  • 💵 Typical Roundtrip Price: $200–$350 from major U.S. cities
  • ✈️ Flight Time from U.S.: 2-4 hours (direct from many cities)
  • 🛫 Best Airlines: American, United, Southwest, Frontier
  • 📅 Best Time to Visit: March to June 🌞 (before hurricane season)
  • 🏝️ Perfect for: Scuba divers 🤿, beach lovers 🏖️, and all-inclusive fans 🍹

Cozumel is that perfect Mexican island escape without the Cancun chaos or Tulum price tags. This laid-back paradise sits right off the Yucatan Peninsula with some of the clearest waters in the Caribbean.

Nothing beats the slow pace of island life.

Palancar Reef is basically underwater heaven with visibility so good you can see forever and coral formations that will make your jaw drop. Even if you’re just snorkeling at El Cielo (literally “The Heaven”), you’ll swim with starfish in water so clear it looks like they’re floating in air. For beaches, Playa San Francisco gives you those perfect white sands without the crowds, while Playa Chen Rio on the wild east side has natural rock pools where you can soak while waves crash nearby.

Getting here won’t break the bank. American and United often drop roundtrip fares to around $250 from Texas and Florida. If you’re flexible, Frontier sometimes dips to $200, though you’ll need to pack light to avoid extra fees. You can also fly into Cancún, which is often cheaper, then take the 45-minute ferry over for about $20 each way.

Cozumel is more relaxed than its mainland neighbor of Cancún.

8. Puerto Rico

  • 💵 Typical Roundtrip Price: $100–$250 from major U.S. cities
  • ✈️ Flight Time from U.S.: 2-5 hours (direct from many cities)
  • 🛫 Best Airlines: JetBlue, Spirit, United, Southwest
  • 📅 Best Time to Visit: December to April ☀️ (dry season)
  • 🏝️ Perfect for: Culture lovers 🎭, foodies 🍽️, and beach hoppers 🏄‍♀️

Puerto Rico is tropical paradise without the passport hassle or currency exchange math. This Caribbean island gives you colonial charm, rainforest adventures, and postcard beaches all with your regular U.S. phone plan still working.

High-angle view of white villas nestled in lush green mountains overlooking the ocean at sunset
Golden hour looks a little different when you are surrounded by mountains and the sea.

Old San Juan looks like someone dropped colorful Mediterranean buildings onto a Caribbean island, with blue cobblestone streets and massive forts that are basically made for your Instagram feed. But the real magic happens outside the city at El Yunque rainforest where you can hike to waterfalls so perfect they look fake, or the bioluminescent bay at Vieques where the water literally glows at night when you move through it.

JetBlue and Spirit often have flash sales with $100-150 roundtrip fares from the East Coast, while Southwest regularly runs deals under $250 from southern cities like Houston and Orlando.

Who needs an expensive flight when Puerto Rico delivers Caribbean perfection with mainland U.S. prices and no need to change your dollars?

9. Crete, Greece

  • 💵 Typical Roundtrip Price: $500–$700 from major U.S. cities
  • ✈️ Flight Time from U.S.: 12-15 hours (usually 1-2 stops)
  • 🛫 Best Airlines: Turkish Airlines, Emirates, Delta, Lufthansa
  • 📅 Best Time to Visit: April to June, September to October 🌞 (shoulder seasons)
  • 🏝️ Perfect for: History buffs 🏛️, beach lovers 🏖️, and food enthusiasts 🍷

Crete delivers that dreamy Greek island experience without the Santorini crowds or Mykonos prices. This Mediterranean giant has enough beaches, mountains, and ancient ruins to keep you busy for weeks, all at prices that won’t make your wallet weep.

Cheap tropical vacations will transport you to islands like Crete.

Balos Beach looks straight out of a fantasy with its turquoise lagoon and pink-tinged sand, while the ancient ruins of Knossos Palace let you walk through actual 4,000-year-old Minoan history. For an adventure that tourists rarely find, hike the dramatic Samaria Gorge where cliffs tower 1,600 feet overhead and wild goats practically pose for your photos.

Getting here might seem pricey, but there’s a hack. Fly into Athens on a budget carrier like Norse Atlantic (often under $400 roundtrip), then grab a separate $50-100 ticket on Aegean Airlines or Ryanair to Heraklion or Chania

Travel in May or October for the perfect combo of good weather, fewer tourists, and rock-bottom prices.
