Cliff’s Cabin sits on a wooded mountainside about four miles above Livingston, Montana, and Cliff built it himself from trees he cut on his own tractor-powered sawmill. The loft has a king bed and an air mattress, and a second bedroom called the Powder Room has a double. You’ll have a full kitchen and an indoor fireplace, with family antiques and hand-stitched comforters throughout (none of the mounts on the walls are store-bought).
The 50-foot covered porch hangs high in the treetops over the Yellowstone River, with the Crazy Mountains rising on the far side of the valley. You can grill and eat dinner out there, then move to the fire pit lounge once the stars come out over a sky with zero light pollution. My favorite plan here would be coffee on the porch at sunrise, keeping an eye out for deer and elk moving through the trees below.
Downtown Livingston is a 13-minute drive, and Bozeman is about 25 minutes away. Yellowstone National Park is 45 minutes up Paradise Valley, and two river fishing accesses are only 10 minutes from the cabin. Before you head out, grab the booklet the hosts put together with their favorite places to eat and drink in Livingston.

Yellowstone Basecamp Lodge is a four-bedroom log home on five private acres in Paradise Valley, just outside Emigrant, Montana. The main-floor primary suite has a king bed and a bathroom with heated tile floors, upstairs has a king room and a two-queen room with a deep soaker tub in the bathroom between them, and the downstairs queen has its own en-suite. The kitchen is stocked for full meals with an induction range, an Instant Pot, a Dutch oven, and both drip and Keurig coffee makers.
Views of Emigrant Peak and the Absaroka Range fill the deck, and the swing set is where you’ll want to be for the alpenglow after grilling dinner. Upstairs, you can put on a record from the vinyl collection and read by the wood stove, while the basement has a foosball game room and a gear room stocked with bear spray for day hikes. I’d happily trade one park day for an afternoon in the hammock and an evening around the gas fire pit.
The lodge sits halfway between Livingston and Gardiner, about 26 miles from Yellowstone National Park and 2 miles from the Yellowstone River. Chico Hot Springs is 11 miles away and Sage Lodge is 9, and a 7-mile drive gets you into Emigrant for barbecue at Follow Yer Nose BBQ or pastries at Wildflour Bakery. The hosts take care of trash removal, which saves you a trip to the collection station that many area rentals require.
10. Bear Creek Log Cabin, Montana

Bear Creek Log Cabin is a restored 1,500-square-foot trapper-style cabin on 10 acres of forest just outside Bozeman, Montana, built from lodgepole pines harvested right on the property. Both bedrooms are upstairs (a king in one, a queen and a full in the other), with a queen pull-out sofa downstairs under the vaulted log ceiling. The large galley kitchen has a glass cooktop and a dishwasher, and a wood stove warms the living room, where you may notice a slight slant in the floor since the cabin sits on a slope.
Bear Creek flows right past the front door, with brown and rainbow trout in its deeper pools. The hot tub sits among the trees with a clear view of the Milky Way, and firewood is provided for the fire pit beside a slate patio with two heaters. I recommend ending each night in that hot tub with the creek rushing below, keeping an eye out for moose and elk in the berry bushes.
Downtown Bozeman is a 10-minute drive, and Big Sky and Yellowstone National Park are about an hour away. State land for hiking and mountain biking starts less than a mile from the cabin, and Bozeman Hot Springs is 30 minutes away with 12 pools and live music on Thursday and Sunday evenings. Expect no cell service at the cabin, though the fiber Wi-Fi is fast, and the rate covers four guests with $20 per night for each extra person.
