2. Monte Vista, West Virginia
- 👥 8 guests | 🛏️ 3 bedrooms | 💰 ~$616/night
- 🏔️ Architect-designed mountaintop retreat on 33 private acres with a three-state view
- 🍂 Best in: mid to late October for Eastern Panhandle fall color
- ⚠️ AWD/4WD strongly recommended year-round

Monte Vista is a design-forward mountaintop cabin on 33 private acres near Berkeley Springs, and it’s the only Airbnb Luxe home in West Virginia. The upstairs primary suite has a California king, a private coffee and wine bar, and a vaulted spa-style bath with a 9-foot shower, while the lower-level suite pairs a king bed with a wood-burning stove and its own bathroom. A twin bunk loft and a semi-private California king in a main-floor bump-out (complete with a ship portal window) round out the sleeping space, and the kitchen has professional-grade appliances and a 12-foot maple bar.
Out on the main deck, a six-person elevated hot tub and a clear hanging egg swing look out over a panoramic view that stretches across three states. The lower level walks out to a stone fire pit, a full sport court with pickleball and basketball gear, a half-mile private hiking trail, and a golf tee box where you can drive the host’s biodegradable balls off the mountain (bringing your own is strictly off-limits). I’d happily spend a crisp fall weekend here firing up the pizza oven on the covered porch and ending each night in the hot tub.
The property backs up to Cacapon Resort State Park, about a five-minute walk away, with an 18-hole golf course, horseback riding, mountain bike trails, and a lake with a swim beach. The town of Berkeley Springs is an easy drive for dinner once you’ve had your fill of the view. Plan on AWD or 4WD in any season because the drive in includes a 1.8-mile gravel road through a gated development, and the host strongly recommends packing tire chains for any month when snow is possible.

- 🌲 Rustic valley cabin beside George Washington National Forest, about 2 hours from DC
- 🍂 Best in: mid to late October for Lost River Valley color
- 🐕 Pets welcome

Lost Pines Cabin is a rustic retreat in West Virginia’s Lost River Valley, right next to George Washington National Forest and about two hours from the Washington, DC area. The layout is flipped, with two queen bedrooms, a king bedroom, and two full bathrooms on the first floor, while the upstairs great room holds the full kitchen, dining area, half bath, and a living room with a fireplace. Fiber internet covers the whole property and there’s a dedicated workspace, plus a landline for emergencies if you’d rather unplug.
Both levels have screened porches and decks facing across the valley, and the upper porch has a wood-burning fireplace that’s perfect for s’mores. Out back you’ll find a private hot tub, and a separate building on the property serves as a yoga studio with built-in speakers and mats, an unusual extra for a cabin rental. My favorite plan here would be a morning stretch in the studio followed by coffee on the upper porch while the valley wakes up.
Trout Pond Recreation Area is a 10-minute drive for hiking trails and a seasonal beach, and the Cranny Crow Overlook in Lost River State Park is about 20 minutes away. The Lost River General Store and the award-winning Guesthouse restaurant are only minutes from the cabin, and Lost River Grill makes an easy dinner stop on the way back from the overlook. Downtown Wardensville has the Lost River Trading Post and the Wordplay bookstore, and back at the cabin, expect stairs between the bedrooms and the upstairs kitchen.

13. The Vale at Será, West Virginia
- 👥 4 guests | 🛏️ 2 bedrooms | 💰 ~$480/night
- 🌲 Architect-designed modern villa on 12.5 wooded acres, 5 minutes from Wardensville
- 🍂 Best in: mid to late October for Potomac Highlands color
- 🐕 Dog-friendly, with a dog bed and bowls provided

The Vale at Será is a modern villa on 12.5 private forested acres in Wardensville, designed by the architect who owns it with his wife and about two hours from Washington, DC. Both bedrooms have king beds facing the view and their own spa-style bathrooms with dual shower heads and smart toilets, while 9-foot floor-to-ceiling windows frame the tree canopy from every room. The chef’s kitchen comes fully equipped alongside a stocked coffee bar, and a wood-burning stove keeps the living space cozy on cool fall nights.
The highlight is a heated plunge pool built into the private back deck and angled for stargazing through the treetops, with jets you can switch on or off and heat that goes up to 104 degrees. Guests of both villas share a six-person panoramic barrel sauna, an outdoor shower, a fire pit area, and private unmarked hiking trails, and the property borders George Washington National Forest. I can’t think of a better way to end a day of leaf-peeping than going back and forth between the sauna and the plunge pool under the stars.
Downtown Wardensville is five minutes away, and Mack’s Bingo Kitchen there comes from the team behind Rose’s Luxury, a Michelin-rated restaurant in DC. You’re also well placed for day trips to Shenandoah National Park and Dolly Sods Wilderness, and Dakota Glass Works in town offers glass-blowing demos and classes. Keep in mind the property follows pack-in, pack-out rules for trash, and dogs need to stay out of the pool and sauna.
