The cheapest place to fly in December depends on your departure airport and which part of the month you can travel. For a short trip from the US, I would start by comparing Las Vegas, Miami and Oaxaca. For a beach or nature holiday, add Belize and Costa Rica. The long-haul destinations below need a longer stay and a separate check of the overall budget.

December has two very different booking problems: finding value before Christmas and making a holiday-week trip affordable. Early December can offer a better fare, but local events can still make the hotel expensive. This guide compares 12 destinations, explains those tradeoffs and includes a dated fare check plus direct searches for your own travel weeks.

Early December or Christmas week? Check these dates

Compare an early-month stay, a mid-month stay and your holiday dates if you have flexibility. Keep the trip length the same and check the hotel at the same time as the flight. There is no single cheapest week that works for every destination.

A real fare check: Boston to Miami before Christmas vs. Christmas week

Checked October 9, 2026 on Google Flights: Boston (BOS) to Miami (MIA), roundtrip for one adult in economy, in US dollars. To make the comparison useful, I matched Delta Main Classic fares with nonstop flights both ways and Saturday-to-Saturday dates seven days apart. These are displayed booking-option quotes, not completed airline checkouts or prices guaranteed to remain available.

Both fare cards included a carry-on and seat selection, with no change fee but a possible fare difference; both were nonrefundable. Google displayed $90 for the first checked bag across each roundtrip, excluded from the prices above. All flight times are local. The Christmas-week arrival is late, so you still need the first hotel night even though there is little usable time that evening.

The matched airfare difference was $383 per person. But the earlier trip overlaps Art Basel’s final public days. For a solo traveler paying for seven hotel nights, about $55 more per night for the earlier stay would erase that flight saving. That is a break-even illustration, not a hotel quote; accommodation was not priced in this check.

The early-December search also offered Delta Main Basic at $199, with different seat and change conditions. Comparing that headline price with the holiday Main Classic fare would exaggerate the saving for the same product. This is why the table uses $309 against $692. Other airlines, departure times and nearby dates may offer a better fit; this is one small comparison, not a survey of the cheapest December fares.

1. Las Vegas, Nevada, USA

Las Vegas is a sensible starting point for a short US trip when you want shows, restaurant choices and an evening itinerary that does not depend on beach weather. December suits wandering decorated hotel lobbies and planning a few nights out on the Strip. Pack for winter evenings, and check the hotel’s actual pool schedule if swimming is part of the plan.

The big exception to “go early for a quiet stay” is the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, December 3–12, 2026. Those dates give rodeo fans a reason to visit, but they also mean an early-month hotel quote deserves a closer look. If the rodeo is not your reason for going, compare a date pair after it as well as one before Christmas.

Search LAS, then price the room through the final total, including any mandatory resort fee, tax and parking you will use. A low nightly rate can be less appealing once those are added. Choose a base near the shows and Las Vegas restaurants you actually want; repeated rides across town can eat into the airfare saving.

2. Belize, Central America

Belize is appealing when the holiday revolves around a specific place: reef outings from a caye, a mainland beach stay, or inland ruins and forest. For a short trip, choose the experience first. Trying to combine several islands, a jungle lodge and Placencia can turn an inexpensive flight into a transport-heavy week.

International flights arrive at Philip Goldson International Airport (BZE), outside Belize City. That is the start of the journey, not necessarily your holiday base. For Caye Caulker or Ambergris Caye, compare the complete onward route: ground transfer plus water taxi, or a domestic flight where available. Check which airport a domestic ticket actually uses and leave room for delays between separate bookings.

Belize’s tourism board places December within its high season. Do not count on a blanket pre-Christmas discount. Price the lodging and reef trips before buying the airfare, and keep boat days flexible for sea conditions. The islands, ruins and coastal scenery are the draw; a particular wildlife sighting or uninterrupted sunshine is never part of the ticket.

3. Oaxaca, Mexico

Oaxaca city is my first comparison here for a trip built around markets, mole, architecture and evenings in a historic center. Staying near the center makes it easier to explore on foot and leave room for a separate outing beyond town. The appeal is having plenty to do without moving hotels every other day.

Search OAX for the city. A low fare to Puerto Escondido or Huatulco is a different trip on the coast, even though all three are in Oaxaca state. Likewise, a bargain into Mexico City needs an onward flight or a substantial overland journey. Compare the complete ticket and connection before treating MEX as a cheaper substitute.

The distinctive December draw is Noche de Rábanos, traditionally held on December 23 in Oaxaca’s Zócalo, with elaborate carved-radish displays. Check the current year’s program and lodging before committing to that date. If food and the city’s architecture matter more than the festival, compare an earlier week so you can choose on the combined flight-and-hotel price.

4. Budapest, Hungary

Budapest is the festive city option in this list: Christmas-market stalls, thermal baths, cafés and evening views across the Danube. Choose it because that sounds like the holiday you want. It is not a warm-weather substitute for Miami or Goa, regardless of which airfare comes out lower.

For 2026, the Advent Basilica organizer lists November 13 through January 1, 2027 at St. Stephen’s Square. That gives a confirmed event to build around, but it does not establish the dates of every Budapest market. Check holiday opening hours for the specific market, bath and restaurant you plan to visit, especially around December 24–26.

Search BUD and compare both flight legs carefully. A long connection can take a large bite out of a short Budapest city break. For the daily budget, inspect bath ticket inclusions, airport transport and the location of your hotel. A simple café-and-sightseeing day can balance more expensive activities; there is no need to pack every bath and market into the same visit. 5. Goa, India

Goa belongs on a longer-trip comparison for beach villages, Goan food and days that do not need a packed sightseeing schedule. The key decision is where to stay. A holiday centered on Palolem is different from one built around the beaches and nightlife farther north; choose that base before chasing the cheapest arrival.

There are two airports to compare: Dabolim (GOI) and Manohar at Mopa in North Goa (GOX). Ask your accommodation for transfer options from both. Saving on the flight is less useful if it puts you at the wrong end of the state for the Goa beaches you have chosen.

From the US, this also needs a realistic travel-time calculation. Check connections in both directions, visa requirements for your passport and the actual date you reach the hotel. For Christmas or New Year stays, read the property’s minimum-stay, cancellation and meal-package terms before paying. Do not assume a cheap room advertised for another week is available on your dates. I would favor a longer stay in one area over several short beach stops after a long journey.

6. Dubai, UAE

Dubai is a winter city trip with a very adjustable daily budget. You can build time around the Creek, older neighborhoods and waterfront walks, or spend much more on observation decks, beach clubs and special dinners. Decide which version you want before treating a flight deal as an affordable holiday.

December’s milder weather makes outdoor exploring more appealing than in the intense summer heat. It does not make the month a low season or guarantee a discounted room. Pick accommodation with practical access to your plans, and weave a few Dubai restaurants into the same areas rather than crossing the city for every meal.

Start the flight comparison with Dubai International (DXB). A result into Al Maktoum (DWC), or into Abu Dhabi (AUH), needs its own transfer calculation. For a New Year visit, check the hotel’s event and meal conditions and the current transport arrangements for your chosen celebration. Price the sights you most want to see individually; a low airfare alone cannot establish that Dubai is the cheapest December choice.

7. Costa Rica

Costa Rica is a good comparison for a holiday with a few substantial outdoor experiences, rather than a new destination every day. A forest or volcano base plus a beach stay can give the trip variety. Trying to squeeze every coast and cloud forest into one week in Costa Rica adds driving, packing and accommodation changes.

Compare San José (SJO) and Liberia (LIR) against the route you actually want. Liberia is a useful starting point for Guanacaste; San José may fit a different inland or Pacific-coast itinerary. Compare a transfer quote or the full rental-car total, including the cover and fees required for your booking, before choosing the cheaper flight.

The weather needs more nuance than “the rains have ended.” Costa Rica’s tourism board describes the main dry-season transition around mid-December and different Caribbean rainfall patterns. Its Central Pacific guidance calls December a transition month. Build flexibility into outdoor days and check the region’s forecast before departure. Book the specific parks or tours you need through their official channels; a photo of a waterfall does not guarantee access or ideal conditions on your dates.

8. Bangkok, Thailand

Bangkok makes sense for travelers who want the city itself: temple visits, river journeys, markets and Bangkok’s food scene. A low long-haul fare is less useful if you only plan to sleep there before immediately paying for another flight to a beach.

December falls within Thailand’s cooler-season pattern, but “cooler” does not mean cold, humidity-free or guaranteed rain-free. Keep temple visits and outdoor wandering flexible, with indoor breaks when needed. The Tourism Authority of Thailand’s weather guidance is a better starting point than applying one forecast to the entire country. Bangkok, the north and the southern coasts are different weather decisions.

Search Suvarnabhumi (BKK), and read the airport codes on every ticket if you add a regional flight. Don Mueang (DMK) is a separate airport, so a change between them adds ground transport and time. Keep bags, separate-ticket conditions and any overnight hotel in the comparison. For a shorter stay, several full days in Bangkok may be more rewarding than spending another day reaching a second base; evening plans in the city can fill the itinerary without another flight.

9. Cape Town, South Africa

Cape Town is a December summer option for a longer holiday: coastal scenery, the city’s food neighborhoods and time around the Cape Peninsula. It is not automatically a cheap flight from the US, and the long journey makes more sense when you can stay long enough to enjoy the region.

Search CPT and check accommodation for the entire stay before committing to the flight. A plan that combines the city with wine country needs transport for those days; it should not rest on a blanket claim that every tasting or excursion is inexpensive. Build the trip around the Cape Town activities you most want, and compare a single well-located base with the cost of moving.

Keep Table Mountain flexible. The cableway operator publishes current weather and operating status and warns that bad weather can close the service. Do not leave your only possible visit until the final afternoon. And if a safari is essential, price the specific reserve, transfer and extra nights separately. “Cape Town plus a safari” is a wider itinerary, not three holidays automatically included in one city fare.

10. Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is worth a longer-trip comparison if you want to combine heritage sites with a beach stay. For December, start by looking at the south and west rather than choosing a beach anywhere on the island and assuming the season will work.

Sri Lanka Tourism identifies December through February as the northeast monsoon and highlights the southwest coast’s contrasting season. That corrects the idea that the monsoon has simply finished everywhere. Local rain and sea conditions still matter, so check the forecast and the suitability of a particular beach for the activities you want.

Search Bandaranaike (CMB), then map out your onward journey. A stay around Galle and the coast is a different route from one adding Ella, Sigiriya and multiple wildlife parks. The island’s major sights are spread out; a cheap flight does not compress the driving or train journeys. Choose fewer bases, price transfers and park visits, and verify entry requirements before booking. I would only add another region when the extra travel days still leave enough time for the trip you came to take.

11. Miami, Florida, USA

Miami is one of the first places I would compare for a short December break from the US. You can combine beach time with neighborhoods, restaurants and evening plans without a long-haul journey. But staying on Miami Beach and staying elsewhere in Miami create different accommodation and transport budgets.

The Boston fare check above found a lower early-December Delta fare than the selected Christmas-week itinerary. That is useful evidence for those dates, not a nationwide $150–$300 promise. The early stay also overlaps Art Basel Miami Beach, December 4–6, 2026. Include accommodation availability and the final room total before deciding which week wins.

Compare MIA with Fort Lauderdale (FLL) only after checking the journey to your hotel. Include any resort or destination fee, parking if you are driving, and the transport needed for your actual plans. A room advertised as “Miami” may be a long way from the beach you picture. For a more varied visit, choose a few neighborhood stops near your base rather than treating every outing as a cross-city excursion.

12. New Zealand

New Zealand is the summer road-trip choice here, not a destination I would describe as routinely cheap to reach in December. It belongs on the list for travelers with enough time for the journey and a specific route in mind. A low airfare will not help if the vehicle or accommodation that makes that route possible is unavailable.

Tourism New Zealand recommends booking ahead for its peak holiday season. Price accommodation, the full car or campervan rental and any essential reservations before paying for flights. Check one-way rental terms if you want to finish elsewhere, and do not assume every scenic hike is a casual walk-up activity.

Compare Auckland (AKL) for a North Island itinerary with Christchurch (CHC) for a South Island route. A cheaper arrival on the wrong island can add another flight or a longer transport plan. The mountains, lakes and coastal scenery are spread across both islands, so favor a coherent route over trying to see everything. Pay close attention to the local arrival date when crossing the International Date Line, and allow for tiredness before a long drive. The number of days between your US departure and return is not the same as the number of usable days in New Zealand.

December booking checklist

• Match the ticket: route, dates, passengers, cabin, bags, seat needs and change rules. A basic fare, a standard fare and separate tickets can have different costs and conditions.
• Match the stay: use local arrival and departure dates, then include accommodation taxes, mandatory fees, transfers and any connection hotel. Read holiday minimum-stay and meal conditions.
• Check the experiences: confirm event dates, seasonal access and holiday opening hours. Keep weather-dependent boat trips and viewpoints flexible.
• Check entry and transit rules for your passport before paying. For Budapest, use the European Commission’s border-system status page when booking and again before departure. As checked October 9, 2026, it said ETIAS was not yet operating. Recheck before travel instead of assuming a launch date or an exemption for your December trip.

Common December flight questions

Is early December always cheaper than Christmas?

No. The matched Boston–Miami example above showed a lower early-December airfare, but one route cannot establish a universal rule. Early-month events in Miami and Las Vegas also matter for hotel costs. Compare the same trip length and ticket conditions for both periods.

Where should I compare first for a short December trip?

From the US, start with destinations you can reach on a straightforward itinerary: Las Vegas or Miami for a city break, Oaxaca for food and culture, and Belize or Costa Rica for a nature-focused stay. Your airport’s actual flights decide the shortlist. Bangkok, Sri Lanka, Goa and New Zealand usually call for a different calculation of travel days and time on the ground.

How do I find a cheaper Christmas-week flight?

Compare several date pairs with the same trip length, both legs of each itinerary and practical alternative airports. Check the accommodation before accepting a flight saving. Traveling on Christmas Day may be worth searching if it suits your plans, but it is not a guaranteed discount and can limit meals, transfers or sightseeing after arrival.
