Nuremberg hit differently than any other German city I’ve visited. The moment I stepped into the main square, with the Gothic spires of St. Lorenz Church piercing the sky and the smell of fresh pretzels filling the air, I knew this wasn’t just another medieval town. Watching the sunset from Nuremberg Castle, with its massive red sandstone walls glowing above the city’s sea of terracotta roofs, nearly made me miss dinner.

The most beautiful places in Nuremberg pack a punch that history books just can’t capture. After spending time wandering through its cobblestone streets and discovering its corners, I found spots that tell the real story of this fascinating Bavarian city. Let me share my 12 favorite places that prove Nuremberg is way more than just its famous Christmas market.

Best Things to Do in Nuremberg

Looking for the coolest things to do in Nuremberg? Walk through the historic Nuremberg Altstadt, explore the stunning Nuremberg Castle, and admire the architecture of Kaiserburg Nürnberg and Frauenkirche. Cross the iconic Hangman’s Bridge for a scenic view of the city. Whether you’re interested in history, architecture, or picturesque walks, here are the top attractions to visit in Nuremberg.

The top things to do in Nuremberg right now.

1. Altstadt (Old Town)

  • 🏆 Best For: History buffs 📚, architecture lovers 🏛️, photographers 📸
  • ✨ What Makes It Beautiful: Perfectly preserved medieval streets, half-timbered buildings, charming squares surrounded by colorful Bavarian architecture
  • 📸 Top Experiences: Wandering the cobblestone streets, visiting Hauptmarkt square, enjoying local cuisine at traditional restaurants

Step back in time as you enter Nuremberg’s Altstadt – the perfect urban adventure for anyone who’s finished with touristy hotspots. Located within the old city walls in central Nuremberg, this medieval quarter survived extensive reconstruction after WWII. The narrow streets lead to hidden courtyards and picturesque squares like the Hauptmarkt.

I’ve never seen a more picturesque Christmas market than the one held here annually. Don’t miss the Beautiful Fountain with its golden spires. Try the tiny grilled sausages (Nürnberger Rostbratwurst) at Bratwursthäusle near the main square. The Altstadt sits in the center of Nuremberg, walkable from the main train station.

Your Instagram will thank you after visiting the iconic Frauenkirche that dominates Nuremberg’s market square. Built in the 14th century, this red sandstone marvel stands at the eastern side of Hauptmarkt Square. The church’s highlight is the Männleinlaufen – a mechanical clock that performs daily at noon.

Inside, soaring architecture creates reverent tranquility. When visiting wine bars later, I always recommend looking back at the illuminated church facade. The Frauenkirche is centrally located in the Altstadt, just steps from shopping districts and restaurants.

Date night just reached new heights at Nuremberg’s most atmospheric spot – the covered wooden Hangman’s Bridge from 1457. Spanning the Pegnitz River in the southern part of Old Town, this bridge combines macabre history with undeniable charm. The honey-colored wooden structure creates perfect sunset photo opportunities.

This spot convinced me that Nuremberg rivals more famous European destinations. Visit the nearby Hangman’s House to learn about the surprisingly respected position of the executioner. The bridge connects the Unschlittplatz area to Trödelmarkt island, with several wine bars and craft beer spots making it ideal for evening exploration.

St. Sebaldus Church doesn’t get half the attention it deserves, which is wild considering it’s right in the middle of Old Town. This 13th-century Gothic church will make you feel tiny once you step inside and see those massive stone arches stretching up to the ceiling. The bronze shrine of St. Sebaldus is absolutely incredible – the detail work is off the charts.

The church sits on Albrecht-Dürer-Platz and won’t cost you anything to visit, which is brilliant after paying for everything else in Nuremberg. I loved how peaceful it was compared to other tourist spots. You can really take your time looking at all the medieval carvings without crowds pushing past.
