I thought people were exaggerating about Germany’s Romantic Road until I saw it myself. Driving through Bavaria felt like someone had pulled scenes straight from a storybook and scattered them across the countryside. The first time I rounded the corner and saw Neuschwanstein Castle floating in the clouds above emerald forests, I actually gasped out loud (and nearly drove off the road).

From the perfectly preserved medieval walls of Rothenburg ob der Tauber to the flower-filled squares of Dinkelsbühl, where time seems frozen in the 1600s, these are the most beautiful places in the Romantic Road that will make you question reality. Here are 12 stops along Germany’s most magical route that proved to me fairy tales really do exist.
