I start at Fort Christian, a red Danish fort from the 1670s that now houses a museum open on weekdays. Next, I climb the 99 Steps for a wide harbor view near Blackbeard’s Castle. For lunch, I go to Gladys’ Café in Royal Dane Mall (open for breakfast and lunch only) and order the lobster salad served in an avocado.

Two newer hotels give downtown more options. The Pink Palm is a 28-room, adults-only boutique with a harbor-view restaurant, set in what was the capital’s favorite guesthouse in the 1940s and ’50s. The Hampton by Hilton opened in August 2025 across from Havensight Mall, about 1.5 miles east of downtown, and it’s my pick for free hot breakfast and Hilton Honors points.

My best tip is to check the cruise schedule and save Main Street shopping for late afternoon, once the ships sail. At night, I take a taxi back to my hotel because downtown empties out after the shops close. Before heading down, stop at Drake’s Seat for the classic overlook of Magens Bay and the islands beyond. Oceana is my splurge dinner, set in the old Russian consulate at the tip of the peninsula with views across the harbor. For something casual, French Quarter Bistro serves Cajun dishes, and Frenchtown Brewing pours small-batch beers from its three-barrel brewhouse. Call the brewery before you go, since it has been planning a move to Bluebeard’s Castle.

The best time to visit is mid-July, when French Heritage Week ends with a Bastille Day party in the streets of Frenchtown. Locals have celebrated Bastille Day here for nearly 90 years, with live bands and dancing into the night. Bastille Day falls on a Wednesday in 2027, which makes it an easy midweek add-on to a summer trip.

Lodging inside Frenchtown is limited, and I’d stay in the hills nearby. Mafolie Hotel sits on the hill above town with harbor views, free breakfast, and Sol, a restaurant diners rate 4.6 out of 5. My favorite hike here leads to Neltjeberg Bay, a half-moon beach reached by a 20-minute trail past wild pineapple and guava. Stumpy Bay on the northwest coast is easiest to reach by boat, and I like booking a powerboat tour to see it. At the far western tip, Mermaid’s Chair marks the spot where the Atlantic meets the Caribbean.

On the second and last Sunday of each month, the Bordeaux Farmers Market sells local produce and Rastafarian vegan dishes in the hills. Its biggest event is the yearly vegan food fair, held the weekend before Martin Luther King Jr. Day, with reggae and crafts. For a January 2027 trip, I’d plan a day around it.

The biggest news for 2027 is The Botany, a 20-villa resort inside the gated Preserve at Botany Bay. Homes here look over Magens Bay on one side and the Atlantic toward the British Virgin Islands on the other. Magens Bay Beach is about a five-minute drive away, and trade winds keep the hilltops breezy all year.

Rentals here are almost all private villas, many with infinity pools and backup generators. I’d always ask about a generator, since power outages still happen on St. Thomas. Expect steep, winding roads, and I’d rent a small SUV for the climb.

For beach access, Villa Eau Claire has four units on a private pocket beach right on Magens Bay. Guests rate it 4.92 out of 5, and the bay is calm enough for kayaking and paddleboarding straight from the sand. The villas skip air conditioning and rely on sea breezes, which I’d keep in mind for summer trips.
