13 Connecticut Lake Houses You Can Rent on Airbnb and Vrbo

by Jon Miksis

Connecticut’s lakes completely caught me off guard, and I mean that in the best way possible. From kayaking through the crystal waters of Candlewood Lake to watching the sunset paint Lake Waramaug golden. I’ve discovered some of the best places in Connecticut to escape the city grind and really unwind. These lakes pack way more punch than you’d expect from New England’s most overlooked state.

After scrolling through endless listings and comparing lakefront properties, I’ve found the absolute winners worth booking. Picture this: a modern Candlewood Lake house where your morning coffee comes with panoramic water views, or a cozy Lake Waramaug cottage where you can jump straight from your deck into pristine waters. These rentals aren’t just places to crash; they’re your ticket to experiencing Connecticut’s incredible lake scene.

Welcome to this serene lakefront retreat on Lake Pocotopaug, where 50 feet of private lakefrontage sets the stage for your perfect getaway. This charming 3-bedroom, 2-bath home offers a peaceful lakeside escape for families or groups.

Within, enjoy the cozy living spaces, including a fully equipped kitchen and ample room to relax after a day of adventure. With three king-size beds and additional sleeping options, there’s plenty of room for everyone to rest comfortably.

What Makes It Special
✔️ 50 feet of private lake frontage for easy lake access
✔️ Relax by the Solostove fire pit with stunning sunset views
✔️ Allergen-reduced environment for a comfortable stay
✔️ Peaceful location near East Hampton and a short drive from Hartford

On the outside, you’ll find the lake just steps away, perfect for water activities or simply enjoying the sunset over the water. Nearby attractions like the Gelston House and the scenic Air Line Trail offer plenty to explore when you’re ready to venture out.

2. The Lake View Cottage, Coventry, Connecticut

  • 👥 6 guests | 🛏️ 3 bedrooms | 💰 ~$334/night
  • 🏡 Lakefront cottage with association beach access 30 seconds from the door
  • 🍂 Best in: summer, when the kayaks, paddleboards, and beach cart get daily use
  • 🐕 Pets welcome with a fee
White enclosed sunroom porch featuring a wood paneled ceiling, blue chairs, grey flooring, and a blue entry door
The enclosed sunroom acts as a bright entryway with extra seating and a drop-down bar table right before you walk into the main living room.
Chalet loft bedroom with green accent walls, two plaid beds, vintage skis, and a trunk chest
The upstairs loft setup uses vintage wooden skis and plaid bedding to create a classic winter chalet style for the guest room.

The Lake View Cottage is a three-bedroom cabin in Coventry, Connecticut, a one-minute walk from the water on Coventry Lake. The king room and the twin room are upstairs, the double bed is downstairs, all three with window AC units in spring and summer, and a double sofa bed in the living room brings the count to six. The kitchen has a four-burner stove and oven, a Keurig, a blender, and a dining table seating six, with a sunroom off the back that looks at the lake and seats four more.

The living room pairs an electric fireplace with a record player, 100+ vinyl records, and disco lights, which I have not seen in another lake rental. Outside, the patio has a gas grill with propane included, and the association beach comes with a trolley cart for hauling gear, folding chairs, life vests in adult and kid sizes, and a community fire pit you supply wood for. Two kayaks and two ISLE paddleboards come with the house, and I’d be on the water before my first coffee every morning.

UConn sits about 10 minutes away and Harry A. Gampel Pavilion 14 minutes, with Hartford at 20 minutes and Boston roughly an hour out. Coventry puts you near hiking, vineyards, breweries, state parks, antique shops, and a drive-in movie theater. Two cars fit in the driveway and street parking is off-limits, and you can’t bring your own kayak or board since motorized craft are never permitted on Coventry Lake.

3. Sunset Shores, East Hampton, Connecticut

  • 👥 8 guests | 🛏️ 2 bedrooms | 💰 ~$404/night
  • 🏡 Lakefront home on Lake Pocotopaug with a private dock and a walkout game room
  • 🍂 Best in: summer, for sunset views over the water and full use of the dock
  • 🕹️ Arcade with 6,000+ games downstairs
Open-concept lakehouse living room with kitchen island and wide lake views
Wide glass doors bring the lake views right inside, making the open living area feel incredibly bright.
Lakefront backyard with a gravel firepit circle, wooden chairs, and a boat dock
The stone firepit patio sits right on the edge of the water, making it a perfect spot to sit out by the dock at sunset.

Sunset Shores is a renovated waterfront home in East Hampton, Connecticut, sitting right on the shore of Lake Pocotopaug. Both bedrooms are upstairs, one with a queen and one with a bunk and loft bed, plus sleeper sofas in the living room and game room for six beds total. The kitchen has full-sized appliances and an oversized island built for dining and card games, with a coffee bar alongside it.

A spiral staircase drops you into the walkout game room, where the arcade holds 6,000+ titles across Nintendo, Sega, PlayStation, and Xbox, next to a cocktail bar with a mini fridge. The wraparound deck looks over the 512-acre spring-fed lake, and the backyard has corn hole, a fire pit for s’mores, and a flagstone walkway down to a new Trex dock. Two kayaks, a paddle board, a canoe, and fishing poles come with the house, and I’d lose a full rainy afternoon at that arcade without a shred of regret.

Powder Ridge Mountain Park Resort, Arrigoni Winery, and the Old Airline Trail sit close by, with Gillette Castle and the Essex Steam Train & Riverboat further along the river. Day trips stretch to Mystic Seaport, the Mark Twain House, and both Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods. Lake Pocotopaug is private with no public boat launch, which makes the house watercraft your way onto the water, and parking fits two to three cars on the street by the entry stairway.

6. North Cliff House, Danbury, Connecticut

  • 👥 10 guests | 🛏️ 3 bedrooms | 💰 ~$720/night
  • 🏡 Lakefront home with a private dock and a sauna, 90 minutes from NYC
  • 🍂 Best in: mid-October, when the color comes in around the lake
  • 🐕 Pets under 60 lbs welcome with prior approval ($150 per pet, per stay)
White lakefront house on a steep hill with stairs leading down to boat docks
This multi-level waterfront home features steep stone stairs that wind down a wooded hillside directly to a private dock.
Living room showcasing textured stone wall, brown leather sectional, and green barrel chairs
Open-concept living space features wood-beamed ceilings paired with stacked stone walls.

North Cliff House is a three-bedroom house sitting right on Candlewood Lake in Danbury, with water views from nearly every front-facing room. The main bedroom has a king bed, a private balcony, a full bathroom, and a deep soaking tub (jets are not part of it). A queen room, a bunk room with two sets of bunks, and a trundle bed in the upstairs TV room push the sleeping count to 10, and the kitchen comes stocked with cookware, a dishwasher, coffee maker, and utensils for a full house.

The deck seats 16 and faces the water, with a propane grill for dinners outside and a covered porch for slower mornings. There’s a sauna in the house, and the private dock puts you straight on the lake for swimming and fishing, with room to tie up a boat under 25 feet. My favorite hour here is late afternoon from the end of the dock, when the far shore starts to light up.

The drive out is 90 minutes from New York City and about two and a half hours from Boston, and once you’re settled, Elephant’s Trunk Flea Market is 4 minutes away and Lover’s Leap State Park is 8. Lynn Deming Park has a public beach 10 minutes out for $30 a day, and Frank Pepe’s Pizza is a 5-minute drive for New Haven–style pies. Firewood isn’t provided for the fireplace, and the dock is seasonal with spring installation timing that shifts year to year, which makes both things to confirm before you book.

9. Sunset Cove Lake House, East Hampton, Connecticut

  • 👥 6 guests | 🛏️ 3 bedrooms | 💰 ~$500/night
  • 🏡 Renovated waterfront cottage on Lake Pocotopaug with a fire pit and lake views from nearly every room
  • 🍂 Best in: mid-October, when the foliage rings the lake
  • 🐕 Two dogs welcome ($150 fee), though the community beaches don’t allow pets

This Lake Pocotopaug cottage features a cozy interior bar looking out onto an outdoor dining patio.

Sunset Cove is a 1,430-square-foot cottage sitting on the shore of Lake Pocotopaug in East Hampton, renovated and new to the rental market in 2023. A sliding barn door on the upper level opens to a king room and a queen room, both facing the water, and the living area has a propane fireplace plus a small work nook with a lake view. Downstairs you’ll find an updated kitchen with maple cabinets and stainless appliances, a breakfast counter, a dining area overlooking the lake, a laundry room, and a third bedroom with two twins that combine into a king.

There are two decks here, and each one has its own personality. The upper deck is built for morning coffee with a wide view across the water, while the lower one is laid in bluestone with lawn swings and a wicker dining set that catches the sunset. A fire pit sits nearby for s’mores, the second bathroom has a spa tub for cooler nights, and an underwater mural with a mermaid greets you in the entryway, which is an unusual detail and a fun one. I’d happily spend a whole afternoon on those lawn swings and call it a day well spent.

Lake Pocotopaug is a one-minute walk from the door, and Day Pond State Park is about 19 minutes on foot. The house belongs to the Princess Pocotopaug community, which opens two private beaches a short walk down the street with picnic tables and a floating raft. Mohegan Sun Casino is a 42-minute drive and Bradley International Airport is 46 minutes out. One thing to plan around for a fall trip: the private dock, kayaks, and paddleboard are available May through September only, and the house has stairs throughout with no accessible entry.

13. Lakefront Luxury House, Coventry, Connecticut

  • 👥 15 guests | 🛏️ 5 bedrooms | 💰 ~$1,850/night
  • 🏡 Renovated 5,746-square-foot lakefront home with a movie theater and a game room
  • 🍂 Best in: mid-to-late October, when the color comes in across Coventry Lake
  • 🍕 Outdoor pizza oven on the stone patio
Large multi-story lake house with illuminated stone terraces, patio seating, and an outdoor fire pit area at dusk
Backyard setup looks perfect for summer nights with all the landscaping lights turned on.
Foyer with black double front doors, matching black staircase, and high vaulted ceilings
Front entryway feels incredibly bright and open with those massive vaulted ceilings and bold black trim.

Lakefront Luxury House sits on Coventry Lake with five bedrooms, five and a half bathrooms, and room for 15 across a king, three queens, two doubles, and two singles. The interior was fully renovated with vaulted ceilings and hardwood floors, and the chef’s kitchen has a large island plus a separate kitchenette and a custom dry bar for groups that spread out. A private movie theater, a reading loft, and a playroom fill out the indoor space, and the master suite comes with a walk-in closet, a seating area with its own TV, a soaking tub, and a balcony looking over the garden and water.

The outdoor setup is built for a crowd that likes to stay put. Stone patios wrap around landscaped gardens and a fish pond, with a pizza oven and a fire pit for evenings once the air cools off. Kayaks come with the house, and my favorite part of a place like this is that you can go from the water to the theater without ever getting in the car.

Coventry Lake is a two-minute walk from the door, and the University of Connecticut campus is 7 minutes away by car. Mohegan Sun Casino is a 45-minute drive, and Bradley International Airport is 46 minutes out. Two things to plan for when you book: this listing is request-to-book rather than instant, and the primary guest has to be at least 21.
