Modern Hilltop Lakeside Retreat is a 2021-built home in Colchester, Vermont, set in the trees above Lake Champlain about 15 minutes from downtown Burlington and Winooski. It has two bedrooms and one bathroom, with walls of windows pulling in light and a KitchenAid gas range in the kitchen. You’ll find a full-size washer and dryer on the lower level, central AC, and a Level II EV charger right beside the parking area.
Mornings start with coffee on the dock, which the host encourages, and the dock doubles as your launch point for kayaking and paddleboarding. One recent guest even watched otters swimming past in the early morning. Evenings are for the Solo Stove under the stars, and I’d plan at least one night around it with a glass of wine and nowhere to be.
Cyclists are in luck, with the Island Line Trail following the lake into Burlington and the Colchester Causeway heading across Lake Champlain toward the Champlain Islands via a seasonal bike ferry. Airport Park and Bayside Park are both under three miles away, and from Airport Park it’s about a 30-minute ride to Church Street. The gravel driveway is shared with two neighboring homes with kids and pets, and the host asks guests to drive very slowly and leave shoes at the door.

The hot tub is built right into the deck overlooking the lake and stays open year-round, which is a rare setup for a lakefront rental. Sunsets from the covered porch or the private dock are a nightly show, and you’ll likely hear the resident loons calling across the water. I’d grab a spot on the Adirondack swing by the fire pit with a hot toddy and call it a perfect fall evening.
Mount Norris is less than three miles away, a 3.8-mile out-and-back hike rated moderate with views over Lake Eden, and Vermont’s Long Trail passes within several miles of the house. The Snake & Apple is about three miles down the road for dinner, and Stowe Mountain Resort is roughly a 48-minute drive with the Ben & Jerry’s factory in Stowe as an easy add-on.
