About Jon Miksis

Award-winning Travel Writer • Founder of Global Viewpoint • 70+ countries visited • 10 Million+ readers

Since 2017, I’ve traveled 3–6 months a year, sharing detailed guides that have helped over 10 million readers travel smarter, deeper, and better. My work blends firsthand experiences — from U.S. road trips and cold-plunge cabins to Michelin-starred dining and business-class flights — with honest, independent reviews.

I’ve been hired by leading tourism boards in 7 countries across Europe, North America, and South America, as well as international travel brands. My travel tips and insights have been featured in Forbes, HuffPost, Yahoo Travel, and The Boston Globe. I’ve personally reviewed 500+ hotels, retreats, and flight experiences — and I never recommend a place I wouldn’t return to myself.

I also save $5–10K per year on airfare using flight tools and 10+ travel credit cards, and I’ve invested over $100K into personal development through transformational retreats and coaching since 2021.

When I’m not road-tripping across the Northeast or writing guides for Global Viewpoint, you’ll find me cold plunging in local lakes, sipping espresso in quiet cafes in Vienna, or chasing fall foliage across New England. I split my time between exploring the world and soaking up life in Boston, my lifelong home base. Some of my favorite places I keep going back to? Switzerland, Spain, Iceland, Italy, Greece, the Faroe Islands, Guatemala, California, Montana, Vermont, and coastal Maine in autumn.

    Inside Kazakhstan’s Futuristic Capital…🏙️ Astana Inside Kazakhstan’s Futuristic Capital…🏙️

Astana surprised me. I visited in early September, which is honestly the sweet spot here with warm days, cool nights, and none of the brutal extremes this city is known for. And the extremes are real. As one of the northernmost capitals on Earth, winters can drop to around –40°F, while summers climb into the 90s (–40°C to 38°C). Wild range for a place this modern!

Fun fact: Kazakhstan is the ninth largest country in the world by area, and its capital is still young. The futuristic version of Astana you see today only took shape after it became the capital in 1997. That’s why everything feels so new…bold architecture, glass towers, giant monuments, and these massive open plazas that make you feel like you’re walking through a sci-fi movie set.

Kazakhstan is the richest country in Central Asia, and you feel that wealth here. The Bayterek Tower, the Presidential Palace, the sprawling government district… it all looks incredibly polished. I even stayed in a five-star hotel for a fraction of what it would cost pretty much anywhere in the world ($61/night).

But there’s another side to Astana: it can feel a bit soulless. I visited iconic spots in the middle of the day and saw almost no one…no crowds, barely any tourists, just empty futuristic spaces. Beautiful, but definitely eerie.

In this strange city, you’ve got massive glass pyramids, a giant golden tower shaped like a tree, and a tent-shaped mall the size of a small city. They don’t match the surrounding steppe at all, so it feels almost otherworldly.

Still, if you’re into modern cities, wild weather swings, and experiencing a place that feels unlike anywhere else, Astana deserves a spot on your list.

If you know someone who loves unusual places, send this to them. 🇰🇿🙌 #kazakhstan #astana #travelvlog #honestreview #hiddengems
Last year in Guatemala, this was hands-down one of Last year in Guatemala, this was hands-down one of the highlights of my trip. I based myself in Antigua, which is such a beautiful town, and then signed up for the overnight trek up Acatenango…13,044 feet above sea level and right across from the mighty Fuego. 🌋

We camped near the top, watched Fuego erupt through the night, and pushed for the summit at sunrise. The wildest part? A thunder and lightning storm rolled in while we were up there. Not exactly the safest place to be, but our guides knew the mountain and got us down at the right moment. 😅

Still, standing that close to an active volcano… feeling the ground rumble… watching lava shoot into the sky… it was one of the most incredible moments of my life. A bucket list experience through and through!

Ahhh Bali. While the cold creeps in at home, this Ahhh Bali. While the cold creeps in at home, this place gives you sunshine, fresh air, and that that space you need to think bigger.

What I love most is how effortless it feels to take care of yourself here. Fresh bowls and healthy food everywhere you turn. Modern gyms that make working out fun. Friendly people who are a joy to be around. Beach walks, sunrise yoga, and wild moped rides through the jungle.

It’s one of the best places I know to get clear, reset your health, and sketch out a bigger vision for your life. Back in 2023 I spent three weeks there, and it’s been on my mind ever since.

If you go, check out Canggu for fitness and coworking, Ubud for nature and slow living, and Uluwatu for sunsets that don’t feel real.

Bali is warm, inspiring, and built for people who want more freedom. Can’t wait to go back!

Gorgeous Germany 🇩🇪✨ Half-timbered towns, storybo Gorgeous Germany 🇩🇪✨

Half-timbered towns, storybook streets, and mountain valleys that don’t look real…that’s the Germany I know and love!

I’ve spent years exploring these spots…places like Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Mittenwald, Würzburg, Nürnberg, Landshut, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Dinkelsbühl, Heidelberg, and Hamburg still feel straight out of a dream. These are the corners of Germany that should absolutely be on your bucket list! Of course, there are many other amazing cities and towns, but this will give you a quick taste 😁

Save this for your next trip… and think about who you’d want beside you in these moments. 🙌🇩🇪

Do it while you’re young 🥾⛰️ Zion hits different Do it while you’re young 🥾⛰️

Zion hits different when your legs still fire on the climbs and your energy feels endless. When you’ve got the energy to push for the ridge, climb the switchbacks, and wade through a river for miles (The Narrows, I’m looking at you! 😁🙌)

I’ve met so many people over the years who told me the same thing: don’t wait. Don’t wait for “someday,” for perfect timing, or for life to slow down. Don’t wait until your knees disagree or life gets heavier. Book the trip. Chase the sunrise. Wear your shoes out on those epic fiery ridges.

And if you’re older reading this, hear me on this too…it’s never too late to see landscapes that change you. But if you’ve got youth on your side right now…this is your sign to use it.

This is one of my favorite national parks in the US…Zion National Park in Utah! Who’s been and who wants to go?! 🏜️

Switzerland is one of the few places that actually Switzerland is one of the few places that actually looks the way people hype it.

Everywhere you turn it’s another turquoise lake, another epic ridgeline, another majestic peak, another valley that looks unreal but somehow completely normal here. You leave wondering why the rest of the world doesn’t look like this. 🏔️🇨🇭

To the man out there… who built a life that looks To the man out there…

who built a life that looks strong on paper but knows something inside has drifted.

who leads others but hasn’t slowed down long enough to lead himself.

who’s been craving clarity, direction, and a deeper connection to what masculinity actually feels like (not what the world tells you it should be).

The one who feels the pull to step out of the noise and back into nature, both the one around you and the one inside you.

If that’s you, Sweden is calling. 🇸🇪

Six days. A small group of men. A private lake surrounded by deep forest. Wild silence. Cold immersion. Breathwork that rewires your nervous system. Wood-fired sauna. Forest skills. A solo quest with nothing but yourself and the trees. Real food. Real conversations. Real brotherhood.

This is not a break, but a reset. A remembering.

A chance to reclaim the part of you that knows exactly who you are and what you’re here to do.

If you’re ready to slow down, to step into self-leadership with more intention, and to reconnect with the wild masculine in a way that feels grounded, honest, and real…this is your moment.

Comment SWEDEN for details.

Come meet the version of you that’s been waiting. Feb 2026 🔥

What if you gave this next year your whole heart? What if you gave this next year your whole heart?

Not the “I’ll start in January” version. I mean showing up fully…today. In your body. In your habits. In your work. In the way you speak to yourself. In the life you want to build.

We’ve still got time. November isn’t over. The year isn’t over. And who you choose to be today shapes everything that comes next.

I’m choosing to go all in. If you feel that same pull…begin now. Not on the first. Not when it’s convenient. Now. Lets give these next 40 days our all!

Tag or share this with the person you want in your corner for the next 40 days. Accountability changes everything! 🤝

There’s a specific shade of blue in Greece that do There’s a specific shade of blue in Greece that doesn’t exist anywhere else…🇬🇷

Naxos mornings when the alleys are cool and faintly blue before the sun hits. Paros afternoons with that warm breeze that moves through the white stone. Santorini evenings when the light drops and the island slips into those soft colors everyone comes for. 🌅

Out of the five Greek islands I’ve been to, Paros is my favorite. It hits this perfect middle ground: less touristy than Santorini or Mykonos, but not so quiet that you’re bored. It’s beautiful, upscale in a subtle way, and the vibe there just clicked for me.

These clips are from my trip last year, but I can still remember exactly how the air felt, the slow pace, the quiet. Greece has this way of slowing you down and making you notice everything.

If you’re looking for a place that feels both surreal and grounding at the same time, the Greek islands should definitely be on your radar 🇬🇷👀

Last year, I stayed a couple nights at Eagle’s Nes Last year, I stayed a couple nights at Eagle’s Nest above Lake Atitlan, and it definitely lived up to the hype. The views are unreal…volcanoes rising out of the lake, morning clouds drifting through the valley, and that quiet energy you only get in places that sit a little closer to the sky 🙌 There’s just something about waking up above the lake with volcanoes in every direction, that made me feel more alive! 🔥

This place has a certain energy. Creative. Alternative. A little wild. Not for everyone…but if you’re into yoga, movement, or anything that reconnects you to your body, you’ll get why people come here and never want to leave.

Sunrise yoga on the deck is worth the early wakeup, and the classes are actually awesome. I even tried acro yoga for the first time and somehow survived. Ended up loving it. 🧘‍♂️

A few tips if you go:
- Eagle’s Nest is in San Marcos La Laguna, the most alternative town on the lake
- You’ll be hopping tuk-tuks and boats to get around
- It’s more of a social, communal atmosphere than a resort-style experience
- Book early if you want a private cabin or dome room, they fill up fast.
- Best time to come is dry season (Nov to April) for clear views
- Come for the yoga, but stay for the sunsets & food. They’re next-level!

But here’s the honest part: the energy at Eagle’s Nest and in San Marcos isn’t for everyone. It leans alternative (kinda like a Tulum). Lots of free spirits and creative nomads. Think breathwork circles, ecstatic dance, and late-night conversations about consciousness. If that’s your thing, you’ll love it. If you want a calm luxury wellness escape…this probably isn’t that.

Definitely one of the most unique experiences I’ve had, and a highlight of my trip to Guatemala! 🇬🇹

Kazakhstan has been one of those places I’ve stare Kazakhstan has been one of those places I’ve stared at on maps since I was a kid. Ninth-largest country in the world, tucked between giants, loaded with natural resources, yet barely talked about. I always wondered what was actually there.

Visiting this fall felt like stepping into two worlds at once. On one side, the post-Soviet legacy and a country that flew under the radar for decades. On the other, a surprisingly wealthy Central Asian nation building futuristic cities out of the steppe.

Almaty grabbed me right away. Mountains right behind the city. Alpine lakes that don’t look real. A canyon that feels like a mini Grand Canyon. This is the side of Kazakhstan that feels alive, raw, and tied to its roots.

Astana…different story. Beautiful architecture, sure. But it feels more like a planned capital than a place shaped by people. Cool to see once. But if I did it again, I’d spend all my time in Almaty and the nature around it.

What really stuck with me was the nomadic thread running through everything. The food, the hospitality, the landscapes. I even tried the horse meat dishes locals grow up on. Not something you’ll find in many places, and it gives you a taste of their history in a literal way.

If you’re visiting, here’s what I recommend…

Fly into Almaty if you love mountains, lakes, and real cultural depth. Visit Big Almaty Lake, Kaindy Lake, Kolsai Lakes National Park, Charyn Canyon, and the high-altitude plateaus. Astana is worth a quick stop if you’re curious about futuristic architecture. I paired this trip with Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan…but of course, there’s a ton more to see in Kazakhstan as well!
