October’s your sweet spot for cheap flights – I’ve seen prices drop to around $250 roundtrip during this period. American Airlines and Copa Airlines also service the route, usually with one stop. The flight from JFK takes about 4.5 hours nonstop, while Miami is closer at 3.5 hours.

Here’s what’s cool about flying here: you’re getting two islands for the price of one. Trinidad offers that authentic Caribbean vibe with amazing street food and the world-famous Carnival (February is when you’ll want to book way in advance). September’s the absolute cheapest month to fly here, but honestly, you can find solid deals year-round since it’s so close to the mainland US. Bahamasair offers decent prices too, though their on-time performance isn’t great based on recent reviews I’ve read.

What makes The Bahamas unbeatable for US travelers is the convenience factor. No passport needed if you’re a US citizen, direct flights from literally everywhere, and you can be on Cable Beach within two hours of leaving most East Coast cities. The swimming with pigs experience in The Exumas is actually worth the hype – though you’ll need to book a day trip or charter from Nassau. Paradise Island and Atlantis are super touristy but the water parks are legitimately fun if you’re traveling with kids.

I’ve been to the DR multiple times, and honestly, it doesn’t feel like a “budget” destination at all. Punta Cana’s all-inclusive resorts are legitimately world-class, Santo Domingo has incredible colonial architecture (and amazing street food), and El Limón waterfall near Samaná is absolutely stunning. Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) in San Juan has more direct flight options than almost anywhere in the Caribbean. Eagle Beach consistently ranks among the world’s best, and honestly, it lives up to the hype. Arikok National Park has those dramatic desert landscapes you don’t expect in the Caribbean.

The Natural Pool (Conchi) requires either a 4WD adventure or boat trip, but it’s absolutely worth it. Oranjestad has that Dutch Caribbean charm, and the California Lighthouse area offers incredible sunset views.
