The primary bedroom pairs a king bed with bold southwestern wallpaper, and a sliding barn door opens to a remodeled en-suite with a walk-in glass shower tiled floor to ceiling. A spiral staircase climbs to a Dolly Parton-themed loft with a queen bed, a twin trundle, and its own full bathroom, while the main level has vaulted ceilings, an electric fireplace, a record player with a vinyl collection, and a full kitchen with a SMEG fridge.
Out on the deck, a brand-new glass-panel barrel sauna faces straight into the Absaroka peaks, with a cedar hot tub right beside it. A glass-front sauna with that view is rare for a rental, and I’d happily go back and forth between the two until the alpenglow fades over the mountains. After dark, pull up an Adirondack chair by the wood pellet stove (it replaced the old fire pit to reduce wildfire risk) and settle in under the dark Paradise Valley skies.
Yellowstone National Park is 37 miles south via the north entrance at Gardiner, the only park entrance open every day of the year, and the Lamar Valley is a classic spot for wolf sightings. Closer to home, the Yellowstone River is famous for dry fly fishing, and The Old Saloon in Emigrant serves burgers and cold beer. For winter trips, Harriman State Park has groomed cross-country ski and snowshoe trails, and Big Sky Resort is about an hour’s drive. The hosts offer discounted snowmobile rentals in winter and ATV/UTV tours for $160 per person, so message them after booking to set it up.

Riverfront Cabin on the Madison is a custom-built cabin on Montana’s Madison River that the owners call “The Fishing Shack,” with a separate studio apartment and its own queen bed added in 2013. Inside you’ll find reclaimed barnwood floors, a custom kitchen, and floor-to-ceiling windows, with a Jotul wood-burning stove anchoring the living room. The primary suite has a queen pillow-top bed and a pebble-tiled shower with a rain head, while two upstairs bedrooms each have log bunk beds (a twin over a queen) and the open loft under barnwood ceilings has a TV and game system looking down on the river.
French doors from the primary suite open out to a five-person hot tub overlooking the water, which is an unusual setup for a bedroom. The Madison is famous for world-class fly fishing, and you can cast for brown trout without ever leaving the property. My favorite spot is the big fire pit on the riverbank, where you can toast s’mores and cheer on whoever’s reeling one in just a few feet away.
The entrance to Yellowstone National Park is a 35-minute drive, and Big Sky Resort is about an hour away. Ennis is 30 minutes north, and the Grizzly Bar & Grill is a short walk from the cabin for dinner and a glass of wine. For a day trip, soak at Norris Hot Springs with live music or ride the antique railway in historic Virginia City.
