I picked this cozy custom log cabin because it delivers on a promise very few rentals can keep: total seclusion without feeling cut off. It’s a one-of-a-kind build on 20+ acres of private evergreen forest, bordered by thousands of acres of national forest. There’s three bedrooms (including a loft with a bunk bed), 100 Mbps internet, and a hot tub under some of the darkest skies in Colorado.
The interior is cozy without being cramped. The loft bedroom opens into the living area, and there are board games and a TV for slower evenings when you don’t feel like going anywhere. The hot tub is where you’ll spend your best hours here, though. You can see thousands of stars, and the bench seating makes it easy to lose track of time.
Buena Vista is 15 minutes away, Mt. Princeton Hot Springs is a 25-minute drive, and Salida is about 35 minutes. You can be in Breckenridge in under an hour if you want a ski day, but this cabin is the kind of place where leaving feels like a waste.

The kitchen is unusually well stocked for a rental (the owners cook here too, and it shows). Ouray Hot Springs is about 5 minutes away, and the Ouray Ice Park (more than 150 named climbs across nearly 2 miles of the Uncompahgre Gorge) is right in town. At $145 a night, it’s the least expensive cabin in this guide, and the interiors (new furniture throughout, two king bedrooms, quality linens) don’t reflect that.
The upstairs bedroom has two-story windows looking directly at the snow-capped peaks. Downstairs has a wood-burning fireplace, a fully equipped kitchen, a dining table for four, and bar seating. A gas grill sits behind the house. It’s a small, well-kept cabin built for two to four people who want silence, good views, and not much else competing for their attention.
The National Forest begins at the back of the property, and several 14ers are accessible from the area on foot. Platte River Ranch is minutes away for horseback riding, including winter rides. The Arkansas River at Buena Vista has whitewater rafting, and Breckenridge is about 25 miles north. The drive from southwest Denver is 95 minutes on US-285, bypassing I-70 entirely.

Three bedrooms (two queens and a bunk room with a queen and twin above) sleep six across two floors. The lodge was remodeled in 2023, central AC was added in 2024, and the Wi-Fi is strong enough for video calls if you work remotely. The kitchen is fully equipped, there’s a gas fireplace in the living room, and the deck has a gas BBQ with mountain views.
No pets are allowed here, and the HOA enforces quiet hours from 9pm to 8am. Bears are active in the neighborhood, and food can’t be left in cars or on the deck. I keep coming back to Blue River Lodge because no other winter cabin in Colorado I’ve found packs this much into one property. There’s an outdoor barrel sauna, indoor sauna, steam shower, 7-person hot tub, cold plunge , pool table, and a restored Vail gondola on the front deck where you drink your coffee looking at the mountains. The dining room has a retired Pallavicini chairlift from A-Basin at the head of the table. You can’t make this up!
Three king bedrooms and an oversized bunk room (sleeps six) handle 12 guests across three full bathrooms. Six sets of snowshoes come with the cabin, and the back door opens onto National Forest. The kitchen is gourmet-level, there’s a custom bar, Egyptian cotton sheets on every bed, and a heated mudroom with a boot dryer for after a day on the slopes.
Breckenridge is 10 minutes away. Keystone, Copper Mountain, A-Basin, and Vail are all within easy reach. The driveway is professionally plowed after every snowfall, but four-wheel drive is required in winter. Wi-Fi handles video calls and remote work.
