Southwest made two major changes recently. They ended their open seating policy in January 2026 – you now pick your seat when you book, like every other airline. And they started charging for checked bags in mid-2025 ($35 first bag, $45 second), ending the era of “bags fly free.” That said, no change fees remain, and the new Choice Extra fare tier gives you Extra Legroom seats near the front of the cabin if you want a bit more space on the flight down.

Onboard, expect friendly crews, clean planes, and simple snack service on Mexico flights. They don’t have seat-back entertainment, but free streaming to your device works well for the 3-5 hour flight. WiFi is free for Rapid Rewards members.

For premium travelers, their Polaris business class features direct-aisle-access seats that convert to flat beds on wide-body aircraft. On narrowbody planes serving Mexico, expect standard first class recliners. Viva is the airline Interjet wanted to be. Mexico’s third-largest carrier operates an all-Airbus fleet of over 90 A320 and A321 aircraft, and they’ve been aggressively expanding US routes since Mexico regained its FAA Category 1 safety rating in 2023. As of 2026, Viva flies from 19 US cities including Houston, Los Angeles, Dallas, Chicago, Miami, Orlando, Denver, and new JFK service timed for the World Cup.

This is an ultra-low-cost carrier, so set your expectations right. The base fare gets you a seat and nothing else. Bags, meals, seat selection, and everything else costs extra. If you’re traveling light to a beach for the weekend, a $49 one-way fare from Houston to Cancun is hard to argue with. Viva Plus bundles a carry-on and seat selection for a modest step up, and Viva Extra adds a checked bag and priority boarding.

The fleet is modern and consistent. Every plane has the same Airbus narrowbody layout with leather seats, USB charging, and decent legroom for a budget carrier. The crew is friendly and efficient, service is in Spanish and English, and flights run on time more often than you’d expect from an ultra-low-cost carrier.

Viva also flies heavily into AIFA (Felipe Angeles International Airport near Mexico City), with over 40 routes including seven to the US. AIFA is less crowded than the main Benito Juarez airport, though it’s farther from downtown – about 45 minutes by car. For domestic connections once you’re in Mexico, Viva is often the cheapest option between major cities, with fares between Cancun and Mexico City regularly dropping below $40 one-way.

Here’s why JetBlue’s seats rock: their regular Economy seats give you noticeably more room to stretch your legs compared to other airlines. Hate feeling cramped? Their “Even More Space” seats give you tons of extra legroom without the business class price tag. Plus, every seat comes with its own TV screen showing live television, which makes those flight hours fly by. And their Wi-Fi? It’s actually fast enough to stream videos and it’s completely free, even when you’re flying over the Gulf of Mexico.

If you’re lucky enough to catch a Mint-equipped aircraft on the JFK–Cancun route, you’ll get lie-flat seats in private “suites” with closing doors. Their planes to Mexico are typically newer Airbus and Boeing models with updated interiors. If you score one of their wide-body aircraft on busy routes like Toronto to Cancun, you’ll get their excellent Signature Business Class with pods that convert to fully flat beds and have aisle access for everyone. Their Premium Economy is a genuine step up from Regular Economy with wider seats and better service.

On board, expect friendly Canadian hospitality and decent meals even in Economy. Their entertainment system is top-notch with a good selection of movies and shows. All their Mexico flights offer streaming entertainment, with seat-back screens on most aircraft.
