Iberia is where I start when planning any trip to Barcelona. As Spain’s flag carrier, they have more flights between the US and Spain than anyone else. Their Madrid hub makes connecting to Barcelona painless since the shuttle runs almost hourly.
2026 is shaping up to be a big year for them. They’re launching new routes to Newark, Toronto, and Philadelphia using the A321XLR, a narrow body jet that somehow handles transatlantic crossings. I flew Iberia’s A350 business class last year and found the seat comfortable for sleeping.
The real magic with Iberia is the Avios program. I’d take a direct ten hour flight over a connection any day, even if it costs slightly more.
Delta’s soft product is genuinely impressive right now. American flies nonstop from JFK and Miami to Barcelona on Boeing 777 and 787 aircraft. The JFK route is convenient for East Coast travelers, and both flights arrive in the morning, giving you a full first day in the city. New Flagship Suite business class seats with privacy doors are rolling out across the 787 fleet in 2026.
The real value with American is the oneworld partnership. Your AAdvantage miles work on Iberia, British Airways, and Qatar Airways, which opens up connections throughout Spain and Europe. Iberia redemptions have low fuel surcharges compared to British Airways, which makes them the smarter choice for Barcelona trips. You can also earn AAdvantage status flying Iberia, and vice versa.
American is a great option, but probably not your first choice unless you already have AAdvantage status or live near one of their hubs. The JFK to Barcelona route uses older aircraft more often than Delta or United, and the food is consistently mediocre compared to European carriers. If you’re starting fresh with no loyalty program, I’d lean toward building Avios with Iberia directly. But if you’re deep in the oneworld ecosystem, American connects the dots nicely.

JetBlue is the new kid on the transatlantic scene, launching Boston to Barcelona in April 2026. The flight uses an Airbus A321LR with their Mint business class suites, which feature sliding privacy doors and lie flat beds. It’s a narrowbody aircraft, so expect a smaller cabin than Delta or United, but that also means more personal service.
The food in Mint is genuinely excellent. JetBlue partners with Charlie Bird and Pasquale Jones, two well known New York restaurants, and the small plates menu rotates seasonally. Economy passengers get free meals from Dig Inn, free in-flight WiFi, and free beer and wine, which is more than any other U.S. airline offers in coach. Everyone gets seatback screens and fast, unlimited WiFi included.
JetBlue recently opened its first lounge, BlueHouse, at JFK in December 2025, with Boston following later in 2026. Transatlantic Mint passengers get complimentary access. The Barcelona route is seasonal, running through the summer, so it won’t help for off season travel. If you live in Boston and want a direct flight with an excellent business class product, JetBlue is hard to beat on value.

6. 🇬🇧 British Airways
- 🏠 Base: London Heathrow (LHR)
- ✈️ Best For: Connecting through London to Barcelona, especially if you collect Avios

British Airways connects dozens of U.S. cities to Barcelona through London Heathrow. If you don’t have a direct flight from your home airport, connecting through Heathrow is often smoother than you’d expect. Terminal 5 is modern, the lounges are good, and short connections are manageable if you stay within the same terminal.
BA’s Club Suite business class features lie flat seats with privacy doors in a 1-2-1 configuration, meaning everyone gets direct aisle access. Most long haul aircraft have been retrofitted, though some older planes still have the previous Club World seats without doors. Check your aircraft type before booking if this matters to you. Free Starlink WiFi is rolling out across the fleet starting in 2026.
The downside with British Airways is fuel surcharges. Redeeming Avios on BA metal often costs hundreds of dollars in fees, which eats into the value of your points. I’d actually recommend collecting Avios but booking on Iberia instead, where surcharges are much lower. BA works best for cash bookings or if you’re connecting from a city without direct Spain service. The onboard product is reliable if not exciting.
7. 🇮🇪 Aer Lingus

You clear customs and immigration before boarding your connecting flight to Barcelona, which means you land in Spain as essentially a domestic passenger. No long immigration lines, no stressed connections, no second security screening. If you’ve ever sweated through a tight European connection, you’ll appreciate this.
Aer Lingus is operating its largest ever transatlantic schedule in 2026, serving 26 North American destinations including new routes to Pittsburgh and Raleigh-Durham. They fly the A321LR and A321XLR with 16 lie flat business class seats. The configuration alternates between “throne” seats for solo travelers and paired seats that work well for couples. Book early if you want a throne seat because they go fast.
The Avios ecosystem is where Aer Lingus shines for points collectors. You can transfer Avios freely between British Airways, Iberia, Qatar Airways, and Finnair, then book wherever availability and fees work best. Aer Lingus redemptions typically have much lower taxes and surcharges than British Airways, so collect your Avios anywhere but redeem them here.

If you live near a Delta hub but Delta doesn’t fly direct to Barcelona from your city, Air France through Paris is often your best SkyTeam option. You can earn and burn Delta SkyMiles on Air France flights, or use Flying Blue miles which frequently offer better redemption rates than Delta’s increasingly unpredictable pricing.
The Paris connection is honestly half the appeal. The Terminal 2E lounge reopened in 2025 after a massive renovation with three floors, restaurant style dining, and free Clarins spa facials. The onward flight to Barcelona takes under two hours with multiple daily departures. Your bags transfer automatically on a single ticket.
The food is the real reason to fly Air France. Even in economy on transatlantic flights, you get complimentary wine with a hot meal. Business class goes further with Michelin starred chef menus and proper champagne service. Cash fares tend to run slightly cheaper than British Airways or Lufthansa for similar routings, and award availability is solid if you book a few months out.

If you’ve heard people obsess over airline business class, they’re probably talking about Qatar’s Qsuite. It’s exceptional: sliding privacy doors, lie flat beds, and a quad configuration where four travelers can dine together at 35,000 feet. The Doha airport is spectacular too, routinely ranked among the world’s best.
The catch for Barcelona? Qatar flies from about a dozen US cities including New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Atlanta, Dallas, Chicago, Houston, Boston, San Francisco, Seattle, and Washington DC, but you’re connecting through Doha each way. That’s a long routing. Barcelona flights from Doha use the Boeing 787 with Business Suite seats rather than the famous Qsuite, still excellent but not quite the same product. If experiencing Qsuite matters to you, fly it on the US to Doha leg and enjoy the 787 suite to Barcelona as a bonus.

The routing requires connecting through Dubai from US cities including New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Houston, Washington DC, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Miami, Seattle, Newark, and Orlando. That’s a long way around to Barcelona, but some travelers specifically choose Emirates for the experience rather than the efficiency. Dubai’s airport is impressive, and a layover there feels more like a destination than an inconvenience.
Emirates Skywards miles are easy to earn through credit card transfers but the program has quirks. Award availability in first class is now restricted to elite members, and taxes on Emirates redemptions run high, sometimes over $1,000 on premium cabins. The sweet spot is using Skywards miles on partner airlines like Alaska or for JetBlue economy flights within the US. For Emirates itself, sometimes paying cash makes more sense than burning miles.

If you’re flying from London, Paris, Rome, Amsterdam, or dozens of other European cities to Barcelona, Vueling probably has the cheapest ticket. I use them constantly for short hops around Europe.
The airline consistently ranks among the most punctual low cost carriers in Europe, with on time performance around 87% in 2024 and even better marks in early 2025. That reliability matters when you’re making connections or have tight schedules. Vueling flies a fleet of Airbus A320 family jets, though Boeing 737 MAX aircraft will start arriving in late 2026 as part of a major fleet renewal.
Because Vueling belongs to IAG (the same parent company as British Airways and Iberia), your flights earn Avios points. Even better, you can redeem Avios to pay for Vueling tickets at roughly 0.5 pence per point. That’s a great deal for short European flights. TAP works perfectly for travelers who prioritize price over speed, or anyone who wants to tack on a Portugal visit. However, if you hate connections or need to get to Barcelona as fast as possible, this isn’t your airline. You’re adding at least two hours of travel time compared to nonstop options.
