Signature nigiri is a must, but the indulgent ‘Crab Rangoon’ hand roll is pure comfort with a tongue-in-cheek twist. The vibe is laid-back, with cool lighting and sleek wood accents – you’ll likely see other diners snapping photos of their platters, which look like edible art. Blackstone’s eclectic bars are a short walk away, so you can keep the evening rolling post-sushi. Getting a bar seat here and chatting with the chefs was easily one of my favorite nights in Omaha.

The menu evolves with the seasons. Dive into dishes like beautifully composed seasonal vegetable plates with house-made ricotta. Expertly cooked pork shoulder with grits, or innovative pasta creations like a beet ravioli, are also fantastic.

14. The Drover

If steak is your love language, The Drover is a rite of passage. Tucked away near the hospital district, this old-school haunt is famous for its legendary whiskey-marinated ribeye.  The dimly lit, lodge-style dining room smells like smoky heaven; it’s all dark wood, saddle stools, and an 80s saloon vibe. 

Their salad bar is comically retro (and somewhat iconic locally). Come hungry, because portions are massive and every bite of steak is tender and deeply savory. After dinner, Elmwood Park is just a quick drive for a digestive stroll. The Drover’s martinis are potent and classic – the only way to round out that epic ribeye. I’ve never left less than fully, blissfully stuffed.

If game day is sacred, Dirty Birds is your new church. This spot near Aksarben Village serves up wings, burgers, and all the fried pickles your heart desires, with a rowdy crowd and wall-to-wall screens tuned to whatever’s big (Huskers, obviously). 

The house smoked wings – especially when tossed in the signature mango habanero or garlic parmesan – are a total must. The atmosphere is high-energy, always buzzing with high-fives and cheers no matter what you’re watching. Grab a table near the windows for sunlight and a view of the patio. Afterward, head over to Aksarben’s movie theater or Stinson Park for a walk. Personally, I love that even if you’re new, you feel immediately welcomed – especially during big games.

Fuel your gaming with coffee or local craft beers. Tasty snacks like gourmet paninis (the “Caprese” is popular) or shareable pretzel bites with beer cheese are great. Their milkshakes are also a hit. It’s the perfect atmosphere for interactive fun.

This Benson darling is pure farm-to-table gorgeousness. Au Courant features a six-course tasting menu that shifts weekly, showing off what’s freshest in Nebraska and the heartland. 

The open kitchen lets you watch the pros at work while you sip on seriously well-curated cocktails or a boutique wine list. Dishes are elegant but never pretentious – one week you might get homemade sourdough with goat butter, the next a photogenic pork belly with fermented veggies. The ambiance is cool, a bit industrial with quirky art and moody lighting, making it perfect for a special night with friends or a romantic dinner. Right outside, the Benson strip is packed with indie bars and vintage shops. For me, the dessert course always steals the show – their pastry chef takes things to the next level every single time.

Tell the clerk you’re “looking for the rabbit,” and a secret door swings open. The bar itself is tiny, dark, and intimate, a true speakeasy that feels worlds away from the city outside.

The menu is a whimsical trip, a playground for seriously talented bartenders. You can’t go wrong with their signature drinks, like the color-changing Cheshire Cat. Another fantastic choice is the smoky and complex Mad Hatter. But the real magic is telling the bartender what you like and letting them create a custom potion just for you.

20. Saddle Creek Breakfast Club

If you want to brunch like a local, Saddle Creek Breakfast Club has your back. This place is cheerful, tiny, and completely beloved for its wacky take on the morning meal. 

The ricotta pancakes are huge and come loaded with lemony curd and berries – basically a must if you’ve got a sweet tooth. If you’re leaning savory, I’d go for the “Benny” with housemade English muffins and a killer hollandaise. The walls are bright and the servers are extra friendly, but be warned – there’s usually a wait (the coffee and good vibes make it worthwhile). Midtown’s pretty quiet early, so it’s easy to grab a chill walk afterward or drop by nearby Film Streams. My insider tip – order whatever special French toast they’ve dreamed up that week, it’s always bonkers good.
