The moment I stepped into Kaziranga National Park and watched a family of one-horned rhinos grazing in the morning mist, I knew I was experiencing something extraordinary. The combination of wild landscapes and rich tribal culture here feels almost otherworldly.

From climbing the living root bridges of Meghalaya (where ancient tree roots have been guided into natural bridges strong enough to hold 50 people) to gazing at the snow-capped peaks of Arunachal Pradesh, these are the most beautiful places in Northeast India that will leave you speechless. 1. Assam Tea Gardens

The Assam tea gardens are one of my favorite experiences in North East India, and Upper Assam is the best place to see them. Dibrugarh has more than 165 tea gardens in and around the district, while Jorhat is home to the Tocklai Tea Research Institute, one of the oldest tea research centers in the world. I recommend flying into Dibrugarh or Jorhat and giving yourself two to three days to tour the estates at an easy pace.

If you want to watch the harvest, go between March and June. The first flush starts in March, and the second flush, which gives Assam tea its famous malty flavor, peaks in May and June. For cool, dry weather and the Assam Tea Festival, I prefer November through February, and I skip the heavy June to September monsoon.

Staying in a colonial-era tea bungalow is the highlight, and I book at least two months ahead because Jorhat made Skyscanner’s 2026 trending list and each bungalow has only a handful of rooms. Estate stays include factory tours and early garden walks, and the new Heritage Tea experience center in Lahowal, Dibrugarh, opened in June 2026 with more than 70 blends to taste. Ask before photographing tea pluckers, and save an evening for sunset at Bogibeel Bridge, India’s longest rail-and-road bridge.

2. Cherrapunji

Cherrapunji, also known as Sohra, is one of the wettest places on Earth and my favorite base for waterfalls and living root bridges in Meghalaya. I recommend two nights here, with one full day for the root bridge trek and a second for the waterfalls and caves. Shillong is about 1.5 hours away by road, and Guwahati airport is roughly four hours.

The Double Decker Living Root Bridge in Nongriat is the highlight, and reaching it means about 3,500 steep stone steps down from Tyrna village and back up again. I start before 8 AM, budget four to six hours round trip, and ask my taxi to wait at Tyrna since public taxis don’t go there after dark. If you have the energy, I highly recommend a night at a Nongriat homestay and a morning hike to Rainbow Falls.

Nohkalikai Falls drops 1,115 feet in a single plunge, making it the tallest plunge waterfall in India, and the viewpoint is a 20-minute drive from town. Seven Sisters Falls is at its fullest during the monsoon, while dry-season trips bring safer trails and clearer views toward the plains of Bangladesh. Pack a rain jacket in any month, and check the weather each morning because clouds can hide the falls within minutes.

3. Dawki

Dawki sits on the Umngot River, famous for water clear enough to make boats look like they float on air. Meghalaya Tourism reports visibility of up to 30 feet, and November through February gives you the best chance of seeing that glass-like effect. Monsoon rain turns the river cloudy, and highway construction between Shillong and Dawki muddied the water in October 2025, which is why I check recent photos before going.

A boat ride costs about ₹800 (around $9) per boat, which seats up to three people, plus a ₹50 entry fee per person at each riverside spot. I go early, between 7:30 and 10 AM, because tour groups crowd the river from late morning through mid-afternoon and the morning light is softer for photos. The riverbank is open to visitors from 6 AM to 6 PM, and I always skip the touts along the road and book at the official boating counter.

For kayaking, snorkeling, ziplining and cliff jumping, head 8 km upstream to Shnongpdeng, where riverside camps and homestays line the banks. I recommend staying at least one night there, since the drive from Shillong takes about three hours each way and evenings by the river are the highlight of the trip. Walk the 1932 suspension bridge in Dawki for views across the Bangladesh border, and add Mawlynnong village, about 35 km away, on your drive back.

4. Kaziranga National Park

Kaziranga National Park protects about two-thirds of the world’s greater one-horned rhinos, with 2,613 counted in the 2022 census. Kaziranga is also a tiger reserve and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it welcomed a record 443,000 visitors in the 2024-25 season. I recommend two to three days here, which gives you enough time to cover all four main safari ranges.

The park closes for the monsoon each summer and reopens in phases, usually starting October 1. In 2025, the Bagori Range opened first, the Central Range followed in mid-October, and elephant safaris began on November 1, a pattern I expect again for the 2026-27 season. For the best visit, I aim for November through April, when the grass is shorter and rhinos are easier to spot.

Jeep safaris cover the widest area, and I book morning slots in the Central Range at Kohora for the best rhino sightings. Elephant safaris take place at dawn in the Western and Central ranges, though I prefer jeeps because they reach more of the park and keep a respectful distance from wildlife. Birders should add a morning in the Eastern Range at Agaratoli, since Kaziranga is home to more than 500 bird species.

5. Loktak Lake

Loktak Lake is the largest freshwater lake in North East India, about 48 km from Imphal in Manipur’s Bishnupur district. Its surface is covered with phumdis, floating mats of soil and vegetation that drift across the water and support small fishing communities. I include it in this guide because no other lake in India looks like it, though I’d only plan a trip here once travel advisories ease or with an experienced local operator.

The largest phumdi forms Keibul Lamjao National Park, the only floating national park in the world. The park protects the last wild population of the endangered sangai, or dancing deer, which moves across the spongy ground on specially adapted hooves. For the best chance of a sighting, I’d visit the observation platform between 6 and 9 AM from October to March and bring binoculars.

Start at Sendra Island for a panoramic view over the phumdis, or at the Loktak Development Authority viewpoint in Moirang. Boat rides from Moirang pass floating fishing huts called phumsangs, and I always agree on a price before setting off. I’d skip the floating homestays for now, since many operate in a legal grey area, and book a registered hotel instead.

⚠️ Safety note. As of September 2026, the US advises Do Not Travel to Manipur, and the UK advises against all but essential travel. Traveling against these advisories can void your travel insurance. Foreign visitors also need a Protected Area Permit, which takes 4 to 6 weeks to arrange.

6. Majuli

• 📍 Location: Majuli district, Assam, in the Brahmaputra River, reached by ferry from Nimati Ghat near Jorhat

Majuli is the world’s largest inland river island, according to Guinness World Records, and in 2016 it became India’s first island district. The island is the center of Assamese Neo-Vaishnavism, with centuries-old monasteries called satras that preserve dance, drama and craft traditions, and it has been on UNESCO’s tentative World Heritage list since 2004. I recommend at least two nights here, because the ferry schedule makes a day trip feel rushed.

There’s still no road bridge to Majuli, and the new Jorhat to Majuli bridge is about two years from completion after work resumed in January 2026. Ferries cross the Brahmaputra from Nimati Ghat near Jorhat to Kamalabari and Afalamukh ghats, and I book tickets ahead on the Assam Inland Water Transport website. Once you arrive, rent a bicycle or scooter to get between satras, since the island is flat and the sights are spread out.

Visit Samaguri Satra to watch artisans shape masks from bamboo and clay for traditional dance-dramas, and catch a Sattriya dance performance at Kamalabari Satra. My top pick for timing is Raas Mahotsav, a festival honoring Krishna held across the satras around the November full moon, which falls on November 24 in 2026. Ferries leave every half hour during the festival season, though rooms fill fast and I book mine months ahead.

7. Manas National Park

Manas National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and tiger reserve in the Himalayan foothills, sharing its border with Bhutan’s Royal Manas National Park. UNESCO placed it on its danger list in 1992 after years of poaching, and its removal in 2011 makes it one of India’s great conservation comebacks. The park protects 22 of India’s most threatened species, including the golden langur and the pygmy hog.

Manas reopens for the 2026-27 season on October 2, 2026, with the main Bansbari Range and the eastern Bhuyapara and western Panbari ranges opening at the same time. I recommend at least two days here, with one morning safari at Bansbari and another at Bhuyapara for birding along the Beki River. Your lodge or the Bansbari range office can book safaris, and I ask my hotel to reserve a jeep and guide when I confirm my room.

The jeep route to Mathanguri follows the Manas River up to the Bhutan border, and I rate it the best scenic drive in any Assam park. Keep your eyes on the treetops for golden langurs, which live only in western Assam and Bhutan. Tigers are hard to spot in the tall grass, though your odds of seeing wild elephants and water buffalo are good from November to April.

8. Mon

Mon is the homeland of the Konyak Naga, a tribe known for its facial tattoos, intricate beadwork and headhunting past. The last generation of tattooed elders still lives in villages around Mon, and I recommend visiting with a local guide who can translate and introduce you respectfully. Plan at least two nights, because roads in the district are rough and slow.

Longwa village, about 40 km from Mon town, sits right on the India-Myanmar border. The border line passes through the house of the village chief, known as the Angh, and I recommend an overnight homestay here to see daily Konyak life up close. Time your trip for the Aoling Festival, held April 1 to 6 each year, when villages celebrate the Konyak new year with dances in full ceremonial dress.

Foreign visitors need a Protected Area Permit for Nagaland, which was reimposed in December 2024 and takes 4 to 6 weeks to arrange through a registered Indian tour operator. Indian travelers need an Inner Line Permit, which you can apply for online. If you’re coming for the Hornbill Festival near Kohima from December 1 to 10, 2026, I suggest adding Mon to the same trip, since one permit covers both.

9. Nuranang Falls

• 📍 Location: 2 km from Jang town in Tawang district, Arunachal Pradesh, about 40 km (1 to 1.5 hours) from Tawang

Nuranang Falls, also called Jang Falls or Bong Bong Falls, drops about 100 meters (330 feet) into a forested gorge 2 km from Jang town in Arunachal Pradesh’s Tawang district. The Nuranang River starts on the northern slopes of Sela Pass and joins the Tawang River shortly after the falls, which became famous after a song from the 1997 Bollywood film Koyla was shot here. I make it a stop on the drive to or from Tawang, which is about 40 km away, and I budget one to two hours to see it without rushing.

The falls are named after Nura, a local Monpa girl who helped Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat hold off Chinese forces during the 1962 war. Stop at Jaswant Garh War Memorial on the same road to learn the full story and pay your respects. Since the Sela Tunnel opened in March 2024, the route from Dirang stays open year-round, and the drive is shorter and safer than the old road over the pass.

From the parking area, a steep path of about 200 meters leads down toward the base, and the climb back up takes some effort at this altitude. I visit in the morning, when sunlight catches the spray and forms rainbows over the gorge. Skip swimming, because the currents are strong and the rocks are slippery, and pack a rain jacket, since the spray soaks you near the bottom.

10. Pelling

Pelling sits at 2,150 meters (7,050 feet) in West Sikkim and has some of the best views of Kanchenjunga, the world’s third-highest mountain. I set an alarm for sunrise and head to the Pelling Helipad viewpoint, because clouds often cover the peaks by mid-morning. Plan two to three days here to see the main sights at an easy pace, since Pelling is 131 km from Gangtok on winding mountain roads.

The Pelling Skywalk, which opened in 2018 at 7,200 feet, is India’s first glass skywalk and leads to a 137-foot Chenrezig statue, the tallest in the world. I go early in the day for clearer views and smaller crowds, and I avoid July and August, when the skywalk usually closes for the monsoon. Foreign visitors need a Sikkim Restricted Area Permit, which you can get at the Rangpo or Melli checkpoints on arrival, while Indian travelers only need a photo ID.

Pemayangtse Monastery, founded in 1705 and a 5-minute walk from The Elgin Mount Pandim, is one of Sikkim’s oldest monasteries and houses a seven-tiered carved wooden model of Guru Rinpoche’s heavenly palace. A short forest walk leads to the Rabdentse Ruins, Sikkim’s royal capital from 1670 to 1814, with wide views of the Kanchenjunga range. Leave half a day for Khecheopalri Lake, a sacred lake for both Buddhists and Hindus, reached by a short walkway lined with prayer flags.

11. Shillong

Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya, is known as India’s rock music capital, and cafes around Laitumkhrah and Police Bazaar host live bands on weekends. The city sits about three hours by road from Guwahati airport and works well as a base for day trips to Cherrapunji and Dawki. I recommend two nights here, plus extra days if you’re using Shillong as your hub for the rest of Meghalaya.

The biggest 2026 event is the Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival on November 20 and 21, which celebrates the city’s autumn-blooming Himalayan cherry trees with concerts and food stalls. This year it moves to a new permanent venue, the New Shillong Highland Grounds, with Khalid, Swae Lee and Boys Like Girls announced as headliners. Single-day passes start at ₹2,500 (about $28), and I’d book a hotel now, since rooms fill fast that weekend.

For views, drive out to Laitlum Canyons at sunrise, when mist fills the valleys below the cliffs. The seven-story Don Bosco Museum covers the cultures of all eight North East states, and three-tiered Elephant Falls is an easy stop on the way out of town. End your day at Umiam Lake, where the hills turn gold over the water at sunset.

12. Tawang

• 📍 Location: Tawang district, northwestern Arunachal Pradesh, near the China border, about 450 km (two days by road) from Guwahati

Tawang sits at about 2,670 meters (8,750 feet) near India’s border with China and is the heartland of the Buddhist Monpa people. I recommend at least three nights here to adjust to the altitude and explore at an easy pace, with an overnight stop in Dirang on the two-day drive from Guwahati. Indian travelers need an Arunachal Pradesh Inner Line Permit, while foreign visitors need a Protected Area Permit arranged through a registered tour operator.

Tawang Monastery, also called Galden Namgey Lhatse, is the largest Buddhist monastery in India and was founded in 1680-81. Its main hall holds a golden Buddha about 26 feet (8 meters) tall, and I arrive early to hear the monks’ morning prayers. The Tawang Festival returns October 27 to 31, 2026, with a monks’ procession from the monastery, yak dances and Monpa food stalls in the streets.

The drive in crosses the Sela Pass area at 13,700 feet, where Sela Lake often freezes in winter. Since the Sela Tunnel opened in March 2024, the road stays open year-round and the trip from Tezpur is about 90 minutes shorter. Pay your respects at the Tawang War Memorial, which honors soldiers who died in the 1962 Sino-Indian War, and stay for the evening light and sound show.
